I'm guessing color that is not showing up in the photo.

Agreed, I can imagine that I can see shades of red to green hidden in the shades of gray from the photo.

Stars are kinda like the beans. I see some ( in hand) that makes me wonder why did this get a star and some that are just awesome with no star. I guess I don't know what awesome is.

Maybe Peace Dollars that have NOT been dipped automatically get the star?

My guess is the reverse has attractive toning, based on the fact that it is holdered reverse-up.

maybe the coin when tilted in a certain way shows some nice colors? I wish peace dollars showed extravagant toning like morgans without having to do things such as turning it a special way, tilting it, under certain lights, etc

Looks like a scan and scanning with fluorescent bulbs can produce really poor results on toned coins.

The rest of his inventory pics look similarly drab. But maybe they're all winners in-hand. image

color probably lights up when coin is tilted.

Hmm. Now they're giving stars to ugly, overgraded coins with zero eye appeal and belong in a details holder? A great reason for PCGS to start doing stars, because NGC obviously has no idea what they're starring.

All jokes aside though, it's definitely a clerical. RUN AWAY.

The first thought is color that is not showing in the scan.
The troubling part is that if you search his completed items he has coins that do show color.
I would think if the coin had star quality color you could see more than is showing.

Buy it and let us know. image

All I see is a corroded coin. The whole slab is a clerical. Not just the star, but the fact that it got a grade too. Or maybe a fake NGC holder, we haven't thought of that yet?

No disrespect intended but I knew this would be your kinda comment. C Mon man every coin that's overgraded or looks like it shouldn't be slabbed isn't a fake. Again it's not a intended shot at you but I'm sure more agree with me..

You can check the cert on the NGC site, but the image there is also a scan and doesn't reveal much.

I did that and I'm still puzzled.
The seller has sold toned coins before and mentions **COLOR** as a selling point.
He mentions nothing about color on this one.
I assume it is pretty much as it looks but the star designation is curious.

This, though I can tell by the toning pattern that regardless of the color, it wouldn't be my cuppa tea. Sure looks fugly in the pix.

But yeah, I'm sure it looks better in hand. Not good enough for me to like it, but better.

Must be some color on the reverse, since they holdered it with that side to the front.

That always bugged me a little bit. One of my Romans was a popular reverse type (Judaea Capta), so they holdered it with the reverse forward. But I was working on a Twelve Caesars set and that kind of messed up my "portrait gallery". So I had to send it back for reholdering.

    I would politely pass...
My Mom taught me that "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

I think they've got 'stars in their eyes'...
It might have a hint of color though looks mostly drab to me.
    Might be wrong though.....
Somebody buy it and report the score (or lack thereof) upon delivery.

Isn't it considered poor form to be discussing a coin in active auction mode?

Do you mean a mechanical error? No, I think it's just an unflattering photo. If it was a mechanical error, I do not think it would have been slabbed reverse facing up.

I'd have to presume that the fingerprint in front of the eagle's throat is what precipitated the toning over the entire left half of the reverse. Fugly at best. Pass.

So does a star on an AU55 Peace dollar normally bring a 5x premium, or is someone collecting labels?

I just received info that this PF67* did not crossover to PCGS.

    image

I think that I will just leave it as a NGC 67* which reflects the great toning on the coin. But it would have been nice to have a TrueView that reflects the coin's beauty that is not reflected in the above photo.

I'm sure the image does not capture the true appearance of the coin. I'm not necessarily a fan of NGC, but they wouldn't have missed a star designation this badly.
