Poll: What kind are you? ... FINAL TALLY

Just for fun image Trying to get to know you all a little better, though I suspect I could guess with some accuracy how each will vote ~Nick

hmm, the Poll machine doesn't seem to be working so here are your choices:

Series - collecting based on one specific denomination; a coin of that denomination from each mint and each year of mintage

Type Set - collecting all the major designs used for each denomination; can include variations of each design type

Date - collecting all the coins minted in a specific year

Theme - collecting coins or medals sharing a specific theme, such as presidents or birds

Annual - mint or proof sets, PMs like ASE or Kookaburra, etc.

I've done them all except Annual, but Type Sets are probably my favorite.

Really, Lord M, I would've pegged you for "Theme" ...

When I was a kid I did a "Series" set of British Pennies, and a blue-gray book of Jeffersons. But it's been a long time since I did a Series set. These days I have three going: a Theme (non-round coins), Date (actually a few dates, mostly family-oriented) and OFEC (a type of Type set image)

Man I really wish the poll function had been working. I swear the button to add possible answers wasn't loading properly (and yes I've done polls before successfully).

Anyway here's the numbers thus far:

    series 2 votes (25%)
    type 2 votes (25%)
    date 0
    theme 1 vote (12.5%)
    annual
    mutt 3 votes (37.5%)

Call my collection eclectic---it includes large cents, foreign (and some U.S.) gold, historical U. S. medals to ca. 1850, counterstamped coins, foreign coins that circulated in the colonies and U. S., numismatic literature back to the mid-19th century, and antique coin scales & counterfeit coin detectors

I have collected in all the ways that you mentioned at one time or another, but I'm more of a type collector than anything else.

The date and mint thing interests me the least. The only set I've worked on in that way in recent years has been the Twenty Cent pieces, but that is a very short series. I have been collecting the early dollars by date, and I dabble with Type I gold dollars, but I will probably never finish that set.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

denomination date set--half dollars 1794--present (sold most of this set last year, but now beginning to put it back together)

series--bust half dollars by die marriage
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I collect what I like...sometimes it may be a series (i.e. CC Morgans, ASE's) and other times it is just the coin (i.e Texas, CA commemorative). If I like it, I buy it and keep it. Cheers, RickO
  • Definitely a series collector except for seated coins which $$$ forced me to do a date set.

OK folks, here's the updated stats. I find it quite interesting so thanks for voting! Incidentally, whenever someone answered "key dates," "random" or "stuff I like" it went to our "Theme" category. The way I figure it, "stuff I like" and "rarities" are themes. And yes if you answered "series and type" then I tallied one for each, unless you stated one is primary:

    Series 9 votes (34.6%)

    Type 9 votes (34.6%)

    Date 1 vote (3.8%)

    Theme 6 votes (23.1%)

    Annual 1 vote (3.8%)
