Gambled On A Raw 1881-S Morgan

I almost never buy raw unless I'm buying at the silver value but I really thought this Morgan looked good and the price was right. Found it in a little antique shop in New England where I'm on vacation. It's not my series so I hope I didn't overpay! What do you guys think this grades at?

I can't tell for sure if the streaks on the face are scratches, toning or remnants of a fingerprint but the coin looks nice to me.

So you think it's original? It's always hard for me to tell on these coins that are more proof-like. Have a difficult time discerning between over-dipped or not. Care to venture a guess on a grade?

looks like a nice coin, no real scratches or anything. I wonder if it was dipped but not dipped right hence those lines. If it does grade, maybe 64-65? Has muted luster though

I like it. Just the wrong mint mark! Probably a nice 65 IMHO.

Bob one day I'll own a nice CC Morgan! image I do plan on submitting this one. Hoping for a 65 personally and that's what I thought it was when I bought it. Paid $70.

I don't see anything that indicates it has been cleaned, other than a possible dip.

Based on what I can see from the images, I'd say you have a 65 there, and quite possibly a 66. Really depends on how much of that haze is on the coin flip.

If you paid close to silver value, then you did real good.

Thanks guys. Ever since I bought a couple fake Seated Dollars a couple years ago when I first got rolling I've completely avoided raw coins unless I was buying them at melt. This was the first step in what will prove to be a very long process image

i highly recommend people spend some time in my counterfeit thread

i've been into numismatics less than 3 years and 95% of the coins i've bought are raw, and i've bought thousands and would be surprised to learn if more than 2 were altered/counterfeit, so if i can buy raw coins successfullly, anyone can. it is a simple matter of getting out what you put in.

sowwy for the off-topic OP. images are too poor to accurately guess but it sure looks like it has promise

I'd say dipped. The obverse looks hazy ... dead giveaway. Bad rinse job?

Wonder what kind of patina it had that the previous owner found objectionable? We can only guess ...

I agree it has been dipped but the question is will it grade? It has begun to retone a lovely red color around the edges which I find very pleasant. I plan to give it a quick acetone bath and a good rinse before sending it out.

Technically it ought to 65 from the pics I am seeing.

Nothing wrong with buying raw coins, I must have made close to half the coins in my Barber half set (VF-XF) and I think that I had a what, 95% success rate with grading them?

I don't see a dipped coin. I see a coin that needs to be photographed outside the holder. Looks 65 to me.

San Francisco minted a lot of great Morgans in 1881. It's not difficult to find nice specimens in this year.
