Guess the Grade on this 1813 Half Eagle( RESULTS IN ) ( NEW Pictures)

mrearlygoldmrearlygold Posts: 17,858 ✭✭✭
There was a thread about this coin a while ago. I finally got around to cracking it out. Did it today, and then submitted the coin. Want to take a stab at what grade do you think it will ultimately attain?

Let's also follow up on this coin in a week or so, after it's returned from the grading service and see who guessed correctlyimage

It could go PCGS MS62 but they are tough on half eagles. They may not grade it due to rim nicks too.

I say body bag at both PCGS and NGC. The scratches in the obverse field and the rim irregularities from 9-11 would prevent either from encapsulating this coin. My guess is MS details at NCS.

That said, the remaining detail is amazing, I really like this coin.

Tough to say from the images, but I have two concerns:

    1. Possible tooling in the right obverse field.

    2. Possible rim damage or filing at 6:30 on the reverse.

I would love to have a coin like that.

I'm not quite sure about the grade, but hope it turns out in a similar holder.

Any chance what we are seeing on the right obv are die polish marks?

In any case it's a gorgeous coin, hope it comes back at least a 60.

That's a commercial 63 all day long, mrearlygold. Don't listen to the boo birds. I am reserving commentary on stickerability, though.

58, but no matter the grade, sweet coin.

It looks like it has seen some circulation and that patch on the right obverse field is a little bothersome.

    55 to 58.

    (edit...agreeing with the cleaned comment)
If they don't come back with complaints about altered surfaces, cleaning, etc. Isn't a coin that old supposed to have a 'skin'?

I just looked up the price. Looks like i'll never ever see one of those outside of this forum. Thanks for sharing!!!

My guess is PCGS AU58. My next guess would be MS62, but I'm leaning towards 58.

For all who think the coin slabs at PCGS/NGC, how do you explain the dentils on the obverse at 9-12 o'clock?

I think the rim at 6:30 on the reverse is a big problem. It' looks like it's been filed. The area in the right obverse could be a problem too, but the reverse does it in for getting into a PCGS slab for me. Otherwise the coin is an AU-58 that would normally get into an MS-61 or 62 holder.

Here's a bit of advice. When you see a coin like this in anything other than a PCGS or NGC holder, there is a 99% chance that there is a problem. Why? Because it's easier to sell and brings more money in a PCGS or NGC holder. Given that, why send an expensive coin to anyone else for grading?

There are collectors that just like the SEGS holder. It was the first one to put the label on top for easy storage and viewing. There are also collectors that still are not fully aware of which service is better and my send perfectly good stuff to SEGS.

Just because it is (or was) in a SEGS holder doesn't mean it's junk.

I completely agree with BJ. Not 100% chance of a problem, but a 99% chance.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that it's not a filed rim, but a combo of adjustment marks and slightly misaligned dies, there are a few handling marks but otherwise a pretty nice coin, and therefore predict it crosses at MS61. Good luck!

I'd like to have a coin like that, but my vote is that it has been played with and will bodybag at either PCGS or NGC.
