Are These Two Monster Toned Peace Dollars the Same Coin?

Coin number 2:

The 'tells' for me give me pause. First, the chin- same markings- kind of like off brown specks, on both coins. Secondly, there is also an off-white spot below the I of L I B E R T Y on both coins. Now, look at the off-colored spot right below the E in W E, between the E and the 9 in the date, barely left of the neck line. It's exactly the same on both coins. There is also a blue toning speck right above the R of T R U S T, between the two lower hair curls that are identical on both coins.
There are other characteristics shared on both coins too albeit the photography style is different enough that both coins need to be studied to see them. I'm sure you'll find your own.

I think they're the same coin. Don't you?
I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to the history of this Peace dollar.

Without a doubt it is the same coin. Even the brown speck in the rays on the back is the same.

Oh well, you know the line, it's not about whether or not the coin is artifically or naturally toned, it's about whether or not it's market acceptable.

I'd be interested in hearing from some of those boardmembers that saw it person and claimed it was 100% legit. It would also be interesting to find out more of the story.

"I can only imagine how long this coin sat stored in the 2x2 envelope. I would guess that it sat in there for 80 years nearly undisturbed. It would explain alot since who would bother to open a 2x2 envelope with a common date Peace dollar marked on the front? Especially if it sat in some obscure collection for decades".

It's sort of sad and sort of funny. Yesterday, some said it was this eBayer's "product" and the "coin professionals" all pooh-pooh'ed that notion. What to be said now except somebody took a $55 AT Peace Dollar to NGC with a story and sold that story both to NGC and to the buyer. Sad.

Wow- same coin.
I have a question...
Why do I get BB's for legitimate coins, cracked out of legitimate holders, that are - well - legitimate! Not artificial anything, not played with --- just real coins- YET --- A coin like this gets into a slab???????

Could it be the TPG company looks at who sends the coins in ???

I think there really needs to be some oversight and accountability.

From what's been said so far, this 1923 S$1 apparently came to NGC with a "story" about being in an envelope for 80 years undisturbed and NGC apparently bite off on the story (any maybe that was partially based on the perceived credibility of the storyteller).

I agree that a submission should not NEED to have a "story" attached. The GOTOTONING guy should get his own NGC* though for this incredible coin.

Funny what an image can do. Brandons images make the coin apear natural, while the doc's look blatantly at.
The coin is a shake-and-bake, no doubt since we even know who made it.
