    imageSome interesting coins.
  • I can't believe anyone has bid on those that are at $1500 & $2000. Gotta be the reserve by the seller. image

I'm not an expert on toning, But I always thought that the little spots as seen on the obverse of the second to last Kennedy and more so on the reverse of the last Kennedy were very good indications of it being artificially induced.

Couple that with these coins being unusual colors and I would say AT all the way.

So why / how / who at PCGS has decided these are slabbable?

I have found 2 Franklins that are the same color as the 71 Kennedy. They were in proof sets wth the Lincolns in the same slot. The seams had busted on them allowing the coins to shift around. Got one of them in a PR66 slab at pcgs, and the other is still raw.

I've also found silver proofs from celo packs with wild color. That kennedy is clad and came from a hard plastic pack.

The kennedys look AT to me, while I like the washingtons- still, those prices are freakin' crazy. My wife looks at me a little cross eyed when I spend $100 on a nicely toned morgan- maybe I should show her some of these to give her some perspective...... image

  • Wow, that 1st JFK is over 2 grand! Amazing. The Bicentennial doesn't even look nice to me. For those prices you could get a pretty wild Morgan. image
  • I can't wait o post my pics of what they didn't slab!!! I'm starting to dislike PCGS they are so inconsistent it's scary....

There's a lot of toned stuff going for 'moon money' for the grade........................................

If someone brought the 76-S half to my table I'd be hard pressed to give them more than $5.

I'd be happy to sell it for $10.

I'm sorry but those low grade proofs just don't do it for me. Spotted toning, and some crazy moon money there. Some of the other coins are very attractive especially the quarters. But I'm not going to pay 110 times what a MS66 just sold for, for a little color.

Those are some seriously ugly examples. How did the purple clad 71 get in a holder?

I've achieved such effects on proof coins with just two months or so by dipping the coin, placing it in an envelope with 4 or 5 match heads in it and letting it sit in a room that hovers at 120 degrees F or so.

If, as Russ suggests, they're all from one submission, how would they get through? Some of them are pretty questionably colored.

This is the real question. Whether they are ugly or not is secondary.

  • I thought all coins that are graded by the grading services are supposed to be genuine without being doctored. If they got into a holder doesn't that mean that PCGS thought they were natural toned?

Any chance these could be toned like this after they were slabbed?
  • mercurydimeguymercurydimeguy Posts: 4,625 ✭✭✭✭

The first Kennedy is egg, vinegar and onion -- for sure!

What kills me is that some "without a doubt AT coin"s get slabbed, yet (obviously) genuinely toned coins get BB'd once or twice image

OK guys; here's how I tried to get this kind of toning, with mixed results:

    1. Put some salmon steaks on the outdoor barbeque grill (must be a natural gas grill)
    2. Sprinkle both sides of the fish (amply) with Lemon pepper seasoning.
    3. Spray grill and coins with non-sticking coating, and Place the fish on the grill.
    4. Place the coins on top of the fish
    5. Grill on HIGH for 10 minutes
    6. Remove coins, turn fish and coins over, place coins on top of fish again, and grill again on HIGH for another 10 minutes
    7. Remove fish and coins. Be sure to use gloves when handling fish.
    8. Fish was really delicious---coins looked like sh-t.
    9. Spend coins to buy more fish.

I'm thinking that, just like eBay, the TPG's are here to support the Coin Biz. If there is a market for these wild n crazy easter-egg Coins, then I expect that the TPG's will slab them.

Heck, if someone perfects laser scanning and really fine-tunes CNC milling of some good dies, I'd expect to start seeing MS70 1793 Silver Dollars anytime now. TPG slabbed of course!

  • Particle Board.....Its a real crapshoot.

A dealer was showing me his eagles that he had laid out on particle board. I couldnt beleive how toned they got in a month. Some looked awesome and others looked like crap. Some were blue and greens and others were brown and black with splotches. I dont know if you would call it AT but definetly accelerated toning.

    Me no likey....

I did look at a stack of raw 2005 SAE I had in my closet yesterday.
5 in the stack. Bottom 4 were completely normal. Top of the 5th one (on top) was very golden. Nothing sitting on it or touching it. none of the others, nor the rev, were toned.

So, I flipped it over last night so it has a chance to completely tone image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

As Mr. Spuds image shows it's easy to tone them one color Russ. Liver of Sulfur, matchsticks, onion/eggs combo, all can give vivid unicolor. But the get true variation both horizontally, and with depth of strike is, near impossible-- except over long periods of time. The only exception is 99.9% silver proofs.
