Prices of silver proof sets on eBay: for real, or are people smoking crack?

Hey Guys and Gals,
Pardon me if this is a bit of a groaner for the oldtimers, but it seems to this newbie that there's a lot of hype on eBay about the yearly State Quarter Proof Sets, particularly silver. What do you make of it?
I've been seeing 1999 10-coin silver proof sets go for $250. Is this gonna last?
Thanks for any comments....

I do think the prices will stay at current levels or higher until after the state quarter program ends +3-5yrs.

I hate it when that happens!!
<< <i>In Indiana, with the property tax reassesment, wheel tax, etc, I cannot afford crack. I now have to just smoke weeds from the backyard. >>
The weeds aren't even growing here yet. Doesn't leave much to smoke at all.
As for the topic of the thread. I think it will last. It is more based on how the mint controlled distribution of this set more than anything else.
Many buyers are newbies thinking they have a great "investment" and will put the set[s] away for years. Those sets are out of the mainstream coupled with demand and viola, instant scarcity.
I was at 30-35 table show a few weeks ago and only 2 dealers had 1999 sets, $235 & $259.
I don't get it either.
<< <i>In general, I think that demand for the silver proof state quarters will remain strong- however, I still don't understand the reasons why the 1999 set has surpassed the others to the extent that it has- can anybody shed some light on that?
Read my thread right above yours.
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

As for the current price of the 1999, my prediction is that the price will fall at some point. I think that it's just too high to be sustained in the long run.

ha ha hee hee, he said "weed"
All they are doing is killing the supply so it drives the price up by force but most don't have enough sense to know it.

I hate to say I busted up 7 of them 2 years ago for slabbing
and for nay sayers theres very few left intact, and as the market makers continuosly
search for the high grade first year examples the intact sets will slowly disappear.
one good thing is by following the pops, one can garner an idea how many are actually left intact.
