I think Russ should be selection. He has an excellent working knowledge of PCGS and the Registry, and I think his responses would be witty and sharp. It would be quite entertaining!

Edited to say that I originally voted for Dorkkarl as a spoof fill-in.
  • I think Russ should be selection

Russ added to choices. So far, DorkKarl is kicking butt in the poll. I wonder how much HRH will pay him to fill-in on Tuesday nights.

here, i'll try my hand at some actual questions,

    << <i>Hi Dork,

Do you think any of the 1964 dated Peace Dollars survived the melting pot or were they all melted? I find it hard to believe that at least one or two don't exist.

    Paul >>

    Hi Paul,

I think there's a better than 50% chance that if a 1964 Peace dollar were submitted to us for certification, it would undoubtedly be the first one struck. I, like you , find it hard to believe that any other one would be submitted for encapsulation.

    Karl

<< <i>I'm curious, when PCGS crosses a coin into a PCGS holder, do you return the label to the other grading company, such as NGC or ANACS? >>

Excuse me? I thought you said "other grading company". I do not consider NGC a grading company, as the lower values always paid for their coins clearly distinguishes them as just another wannabe. Ditto ANACS. Don't even get me started on ACG!

    Karl

    << <i>Dork

I heard you have or had a complete set of yellow pages from a little town in Idaho. Do you collect yellow pages or is this one of those urban legands? >>

    Hi, Mikey.

From 1984 or so to 1997, I put together a nearly complete set of obsolete phone directories from Granger, Idaho. I sold the set for $2.25 to a paper recycling plant in 1998 ...my cost was about 35 cents ...a mediocre profit at best for the time and work involved in lugging those things around. As it turns out, I sold way early, as just after I sold, some people moved back to Granger, and some of the phone books became current again. My collection would probably bring five bucks today. Oh well.... it's just dirty yellow paper.

I did thoroughly enjoy my collection, but some folks caught on to who was making all those crank calls and started griping.

    << <i>Hi Dork,

I have a 1904 proof red indian cent, graded pr64 in a pcgs holder. Will a copper spot on the obverse keep it out of a high grading category? It is a stunning coin otherwise with regard to marks and hairlines. Your thoughts?

    David >>

    Hi David,

Emory cloth works wonders on spots on proof indians. Crack it out and give it a shot.

    Karl

<< <i>Dork...Where have you been? We have missed you........................ >>

Thanks for asking. I've been busy removing PNG stickers from inserts for future inclusion in our slabs.

    << <i>Hi Dork,

When grading crossovers do the graders see the grade on the holder or is it covered up?

    Regards,

    Don >>

    Hi Don,

We used to cover the whole slab up, but about a year ago, we started letting the graders see the coins they were grading. Since then, we've gone ahead and let them see just about the whole slab. We do, however, continue to cover up the little PNG stickers on the back of "certain" slabs.

<< <i>Dork do you need help?

Maybe this weekly Q&A thing is too much to do every week? Have you thought about getting someone to fill in every once in while? how about coinguy1? mike >>

I've thought about letting David Hall help out answering these questions once in a while, but he's a contestant at the Las Vegas Bikinin Invitational this week and got motion sickness the week before that. i really like Tuesday nights so I'll keep doing it. Besides, CoinGuy is getting too friendly with Legend lately.

    << <i>Quarterly freebie
This quarter's freebie is "any denomination that is no longer used." Does that include gold coins such as the $2 1/2, $5, $10, and $20? >>

This would include those denominations listed. Next quarter, we'll allow "only denominations that have Roman numerals in them".

  • Dear Dork (Hallowed Be Thy Name),
First, just let me say thanks for taking time out every Tuesday {well, most every Tuesday anyway} evening to enlighten us.
    My questions are as follows:

    1) Is it true you once sold a car to Marc Bolan of TREX fame? and that you also sold Jimmy Dean his last auto? and that you leased that Mercedes to Princess Dianna's chauffuer?

    2) What does BJ, as in BJ Searls, stand for?

    3) Do you and Rick Montgomery and Mark Feld hang out together on the weekends?

    4) When is MadMarty going to get his first EF Franklin?

    5) Why is there air?

    Best Regards,
    Greg

    Hi Greg,

The original T-rex car was not purchased from PCGS, and neither was any other Accugrade car.

The term "T-rex" was our management's attempt to get away from the slang term "slab" which reared its ugly head in the first year we graded coins. I never had a big problem with the term slab, but others at PCGS thought it was negative. PCGS grader Jay Miller came up with the term "T-rex" and it went over like a led zeppelin.

The only thing we ever purchased for Jimmy Dean was Alan Hagar's backup set of underwear and the right to use his patented "Arrowhead" holder concept on sportscard holders. We paid him a royalty for a few years.

With regards to Princess Dianna, dealers aren't necessarily dishonest...but they do always look for an edge...

    Dork Karl

<< <i>2) What does BJ, as in BJ Searls, stand for? >>

Greg, this was supposed to be a secret, but since the word is apparently out, I might as well make the announcement here. As you know, I invented the designation "FH" for Standing Liberty Quarters with full-head detail. Seems that's just not good enough for some people. Therefore, PCGS will now begin designating "BJ" for Type One SLQ's that display Bold Jugs. This designation will be automatically applied to coins that show full, rounded detail and high relief of said jugs. Coins already in PCGS holders may be submitted for evaluation to have the new desgination added. The fee will be $9.95. I expect other grading services, including those endorsed by the PNG, to follow suit.

    Dork Karl

<< <i>3) Do you and Rick Montgomery and Mark Feld hang out together on the weekends? >>

Not until recently. My biggest project right now is to get all those darned PNG logos off of our preprinted supply of inserts. Those fellows were nice enough to offer to lend a helping hand, Ricky for obvious reasons, and and Mark because he wants to start handing out the logos as freebies at major shows. I'm not paying them in cash, but Rick will get five free submissions plus a free pop report for his help and I agreed to let Mark resubmit a couple of his SLQs for "Full Jug" evaluation for free.

    Dork Karl

<< <i>4) When is MadMarty going to get his first EF Franklin? >>

In the marketplace, PCGS coins bring the most money. NGC coins are next. ANACS coins have some respect. I believe that none of the other grading service coins trade sight-unseen.

As for my personal opinion on the quality of the grading, I believe PCGS standards are where grading should be. I believe NGC grades consistently and does a pretty good job, thought their standards are slightly looser than PCGS...hence the discount in price.

After the "Big Two," I believe ANACS is pretty good (i.e. makes few mistakes) and ICG is sort of OK. After that, I feel that grading quality is very spotty...to put it diplomatically.

MadMarty should probably resubmit some of his Franklins to ACG.

    Dork Karl

    << <i>5) Why is there air? >>

    Greg,

I believe that most Registry participants like to know where they stand and enjoy the ranking, whether they are #1 or #7856. Coin grading is not an exact science. The market is HOT HOT HOT right now. That's why we use the "hot air" grading method at PCGS and no coin ever goes out without at least two experts fingerprinting it before the final grade. While things aren't perfect nowadays, it's certainly a lot better for coin buying public than it was in the wild, wild West days before third party grading. Soon, we plan to begin grading and certifying air. Grades will be based on the smell of the air, the number of pollutants, and it's color. Strike will be mostly a non-factor, and I'd expect to see BJ starting up a registry set for certified air soon. I hope this answers your question.

    Dork Karl,

I am officially endorsing you for not only the back-up Q&A job, but the fill-time Q&A job. It would be a breath of fresh (or "HOT") air!

  • Dear Dorkkarl (Reverred Be His Name),
I know how busy you are right now, helping BJ with the Registry Short Sets for Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarters and steel wartime cents, but I have many questions.

    1) Did you ever stay overnite at Michael Jacksons ranch (not that there is anything wrong with that)? Does Michael collect coins too, or just merkins?

    2) How do I safely remove these Gol Darned PNG logos from all my old PCGS slabs? I sure don't want these stinking holograms devaluing my coins! I took a couple in to the LASIK surgery guy here in Warsaw, and that worked but was very expensive. How do you guys do it??

Thanks in advance for your thoughtless answers.
