This dealer has some big ole brass gonads

I watched this auction since it started at 99 cents with no reserve and thought to myself this guy has a lot of guts. I don't believe I could put a five figure coin up for auction on ebay much less start it out at 99 cents and no reserve. Hope he came out OK.
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?

do a search for that seller ID on this forum and you will see there is significant question as to presence of any gonads.

Folks buy cars and houses on ebay. $13k isn't much, to many. I'll be there are as many
bidders and watchers on ebay as there are on TT. Less cost too.

I'm a firm believer in ebay's format and start all my auctions at 99¢

The most expensive I've sold was $5,005 (93-s Morgan).

I had no qualms about starting at 99¢ and letting it go.

The 1st and 2nd underbidders had 42% and 95% of their bidding activity with this seller, with each of these respective bidders having several hundred active bids at the time. image

It ended at $13,376.65. Not too bad I guess, but 5k under the price guide.

"Not too bad" depends on what he paid. Graysheet is $17,400 if he paid that he got hosed.

The risk of losing big is not as great as one might initially think.

Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.

  • a 5-figure coin started at nothing can attract a lot of attention. Sometimes this accumulates into big bids. Sometimes the sales goes off as a dud. Sometimes there's a safety net installed.

So the action from 8 to 13K was basically shill bidding (or "protect my buddy bids").

If it walks like a duck....

Come on, the "winner" has 100% bidding activity with the seller and the "underbidders" aren't much different. Hard to tell if any of these "bidders" were actually bidders on the coin. I don't think this coin was ever at risk of selling cheap, definitely doesn't have "big ole brass gonads" image

The pictures of the coin don't do much for me. If you are going to sell a 5-figure coin, the least you could do get some better photography. Here is a picture of the same type in MS-63.

There is about as much reality to that auction as you will get on reality TV... none at all. Cheers, RickO

On ebay, it really pays to become acquainted with the seller. Some sellers have such a strong following that they almost always get very high prices for their coins, well above the PCGS price sheet.

It is called shill bidding. This seller takes no risk by starting an item at .99 cents.

What about the fees the seller must pay to ebay if it sold to a shill bidder at $13,000+? I do not understand how that is profitable. I understand if the shill bidder just causes the bids to go up and someone real wins the auction, but if the shill bidder wins the seller must lose greatly, or am I wrong and not savvy to ebay shill selling/bidding?

you can say that again ........
  • If I do not want to start something at 99 cents, then it goes in the store. I listed an 85-CC Morgan in BU and started that at .99 cents. Closes Wednesday. Better hurry if you want to rip it. image

I've seen the posts. But, in this country, you're innocent until proven guilty in court.

And, no, I don't know the seller.
