GROUP BREAK CLOSED - Time to "wrap this up", please reach out to OPC to pay

UPDATE 4/7: Time to wrap this up. If you still want the boxes ordered, please reach out to Tom via:
tsalems1@verizon.net
Or you can call 1-774-573-1731
He will get you lined up and ship them out.
Thanks for trying folks!

UPDATE 4/6: I spoke to Tom today, he is happy to honor all the individual "BASEBALL BOXES" and "FOOTBALL BOXES" reservations, even if the case and box breaks don't make it. Wanted to make folks aware in case of any concern about an "all or none" type of fill. Not an issue on the box reservations.

Started a new thread for simplicity purposes - THIS IS THE PLACE to reserve your items for the break.

Rules are below, I will put product and reservation lists in the 2nd post below. Please post IN THIS THREAD to reserve your items, I'm going to edit the other one a bit and I'm not checking there for reservations.

Remember, we're opening this up at 8:00 Eastern which is just under an hour from now, good luck to everyone and let's have some fun!

GO LIVE DATE AND TIME
Product reservation can commence Sunday April 5th starting 8:00PM Eastern. Any reservations posted PRIOR TO THAT will be ignored, so please don’t jump the gun. We want everyone to have a fair shot at everything here.

1. If you have questions, let me know and I’ll do the best I can to answer or get the answer. If you have super detailed product questions or concerns, those should be directed to OPC.

2. If you reserve it, it is your responsibility to pay for it. Everyone will pay directly to OPC.

3. SHIPPING
1-6 packs – USPS for $4, Rack packs = 3 packs
7-12 packs – USPS for $8
12+ packs FEDEX for $10
Boxes - $10 for the first and $2 for each additional, via FEDEX

4. INSURANCE
USPS
$.01 to $50.00 - $1.85
$50.01 to $100.00 - $2.35
$100.01 to $200.00 - $2.90
$200.01 to $300.00 - $4.85
$300.01 to $400.00 - $5.95
$400.01 to $500.00 - $7.05

FEDEX
First $100.00 is covered
$0.70 for each additional $100

5. HOW MANY ITEMS CAN I RESERVE
PACKS – For all the box breaks, all packs in the box must be reserved for the box to be broken, no exceptions unless OPC tells me different. Most of these boxes are already wrapped by BBCE or OPC, I will indicate that next to each.

For the first 48 hours after this thread “goes live”, you can reserve up to 2 packs/cellos/racks per box. After 48 hours, you can reserve up to 2 more. After 96 hours, no limits and reserve all you want.

CASE BREAK BOXES – For all the case breaks, at least 15 boxes must be reserved for the case to be broken, no exceptions. If there aren’t at least 15, the cases stay sealed. OPC has agreed to SHRINK WRAP any boxes from these cases and mark them “From a sealed case” if so desired, NO EXTRA CHARGE!

For the first 48 hours after this thread “goes live”, you can reserve up to 2 boxes from each case break. After 48 hours, you can reserve up to 1 more per case. After 96 hours, no limits and reserve all you want.

ALL OTHER BOXES – For the first 48 hours after this thread “goes live”, you can reserve up to 2 boxes per product unless noted. After 48 hours, no limits and reserve all you want. This is ONLY for boxes that are not case break boxes, hopefully this is clear.

6. HOW DO I RESERVE WHAT I WANT
To reserve product, please post in the thread with what you want and how many. I will update periodically to reflect the reservations, and I will do so based on sequence in the thread – in other words first come first served SUBJECT to the “go live” time posted below. IMPORTANT – you must post in the thread, do not PM me with reservations, I won’t count them.

7. HOW TO PAY
You can pay via paypal to – tsalems1@verizon.net
If you need to contact OPC, use the email above or you can call 1-774-573-1731.

I expect to let things run one week from Sunday April 5th to Sunday April 12th, unless everything sells out prior to that. I will update as we go, and will eventually make a call on the official “END” at which point I will post a “PAID LIST” which will be your que to pay. Again, cases and boxes will need to be “fully reserved” subject to the limits above to be sold, once they are and paid the items will ship directly to you from OPC. Please DO NOT PAY until I update the thread to do so.

When you pay, make sure you: 1) include your CU forum name and the list of items you’ve reserved, and 2) please post on the thread that you’ve paid so I can mark it off.

8. WHAT IF I WANT SOME OTHER STUFF
If you participate in the break and decide there’s some other stuff on the OPC site you like, contact OPC and let the know. Anything you add to the items from this break can be combined, you’ll just need to work those details directly with OPC.

<< <i>Dan, No reflection on you but why is this any different than the group rips with BBCE wrapped boxes? We have no idea where BBCE gets their boxes. I don't know Tom but he seems to have a very good reputation here.
    James >>

And no reflection on you, James, but do you really believe Tom = Steve? How long has BBCE been the source for unopened material compared to how long has Tom been dealing with it?

Steve is known across the hobby after building their reputation over many years, independent of these boards, and is used by PSA themselves to authenticate unopened material.

That carries significantly more weight than a some dealer who decided they are an expert in an attempt to grab some of BBCE's market share... even if that dealer happens to be a member here.

After all, the board is littered with people who once had "a very good reputation here".

So I don't think Dan's question is unreasonable in light of these significant differences.

It seems like despite my best efforts, my comments were misconstrued. I think Tom deserves all the respect and trust a collector can muster. He is A++ in my book, I have bought from him 2 or 3 times, and I'm hoping to buy from him many more times in the future. Any seeming doubt about his ethics is the opposite of my intent. My inquiry lies entirely with the ethics of the people who handled the boxes before Tom. If that's out of line, I apologize. And I am about to PM Tom to further clarify my point.

The initial fun of the bbce group breaks also had the 10% off element. Which was really nice but Not just for the actual
Pricing benefit, but also as a note of inclusion for the board members that they were part of the community. This just feels a bit like a way to move product. If prices are dropped by 10% I'll jump in too so I feel
Like myself and the board members are all enjoying the break together, not just purchasing another '83 wax box. Just my 2 cents....

I didn't set the prices, OPC set them. If you have questions/issues with pricing I guess you should reach out to Tom.

Not sure I understand the last part about "purchasing another '83 wax box"?

    Bounce,

There have been a couple members that have either asked where the boxes came from or made reference as to where they came from. I haven't seen any response to those messages. I sent you a PM seeking an answer to this question but didn't receive a response. I will ask again here. Do any of these boxes included in this group rip belong to you? If so, how many and which ones?

And, in a similar manner, rumor has it the 1986 Fleer basketball break Tom did on a thread you started and bumped repeatedly was yours as well?

Was the set a 8.7 gpa that was broken?

"Tick tock - tick tock...no replies? Really?

Show's just 2 days away now gang! Am I the only person gonna be at this show from the board? I sure hope not!

Looking forward to setting up again, although will miss hanging with Tom this go around. We'll see if I can survive and behave on my own.

Teaser/off topic for the thread, you decide...
    1) I've got a "modern day" 3,000 club baseball that still needs 6 signatures, but 4 of those are at the show this weekend. Post-show, I will only need Cal and Jeter to complete it!
    2) I'm down to 3 cards to complete my 1956 Topps set, GPA is 6.5.
    3) I just completed a 1986 Fleer basketball graded set, GPA is 8.7. It may find it's way to market very soon (can anyone say SET BREAK?!?!?!).
    4) I just had a couple major purchases, unfortunately they won't be with me this weekend but I NEED TO SELL SOME STUFF so I can continue turning my inventory. I will be in a dealing mood this weekend at the show, so come check it out!" thread

Yes, some of the product belongs to me, but it was consigned to Tom several weeks ago actually. They were never intended to be part of any break originally. Those items are:
    1983 Topps sealed case
    1985 Topps sealed case
    1985 Donruss sealed case
1975 Topps mini FASC box (BBCE)
    1981 Topps football cello (BBCE)
    1984 Topps football cello (BBCE)
As you can see, the things that belong to me are all wrapped/sealed, so for the people questioning the "ethics" of those who handled the items before they arrived with Tom, I can't imagine you could have any issues with any of the above. If you do/did, you should also understand that none of those items are currently in my possession. It's all at OPC headquarters and has been for several weeks, as I stated. Tom's checked it all out to make sure it is what it looks like and that he's comfortable backing it and wrapping it, should things get to that point. If he wasn't comfortable with it, he wouldn't have taken it from me.

To try and front run the inevitable next set of questions...
The genesis of the break idea came after Tom picked up a lot of the football stuff. Again as I said, my items above were never originally intended to be part of a group break. They were things I had purchased previously and decided to consign for now until I decided what exactly I wanted to do with them. All of it was acquired prior to February this year, some of it back to last summer for whatever that's worth.

I saw Tom had gotten all the other football packs/boxes about a week or so ago, and felt like it was the kind of items that people on the board would love to have a shot at getting their hands on. That's when the break idea first came into being, because between what he just acquired and what I had consigned, there was actually a really nice run of good 80s material from both sports.

As I've said previously, I had nothing to do with price setting. I asked him for a list of what he had available and prices, and that's when the break officially got off the ground.

As far as your accusation that I'm "using this forum to put money in your pocket", I certainly don't agree with the negative connotation that comes from that statement. We can discuss that some other time.

There's actually a lot more to the story of ultimately including these items in this break than you know, particularly certain "conditions" that I've agreed to with Tom related to box condition should the cases get broken down that are entirely to my detriment, but you didn't ask me for any of that information. You just fired an accusation at me out of the gate, and that's fine but it's also why I didn't initially reply to you.

Probably a good enough place to stop for now.

    Bounce,

Good explanation, but why may I ask are you buying back your own consignment? Your list above included 1983 and 1985 Topps baseball wax cases that you consigned to Tom. The first page of the thread shows 2 slots of each, respectively, being filled by you. How come?

Yes, the 1986 Fleer set was mine. Again, I consigned it to Tom, he ran the break. I didn't have a slot in the break if you go back and look. All I did was point people in the direction.

Sure, you can try to make it sounds "nefarious" that I had a financial interest in the set break, I did. But that's not distinctly different than if I had just sold the set outright prior to the break, which is something I looked to do with Blowout and with Tom.

I didn't have anything to do with the final slot price of the break, final pricing hasn't been my decision in anything I've ever done with Tom.

    Bounce,

Have followed this thread but not responded yet. I just think that if you would have been up front with everyone right from the beginning regarding the origin of the product, nobody would have had any problem.

Just a little strange that you consigned the set to sell, then immediately bought one of the cards from me when I won it? That, plus lack of disclosure, seems odd. I don't really know what to think. No judgement yet, because I don't really see the "angle", though perhaps there is one. I just don't get it.

Come on, David, you're a decent and intelligent guy... you don't see how this is a conflict of interest and deceitful?

You start not one, but two threads to sell product you sold to Tom... without disclosing this fact?

This deceit, or lack of transparency if you prefer, raises the possibility of all sorts of shenanigans and all sorts of questions.

Not the least of which is what are you trying to hide by not disclosing this up front?

Was this arrangement intended as a way for Tom to usurp the restriction of dealers essentially advertising here for free instead of buying ads?

And, as James pointed out, why are you buying product you sold to Tom? To create a sense of interest... do you intend to take receipt of the boxes... the lack of transparency can lead to these sort of questions.

The thing is, had you been up front about this from the start, I don't think it would have been a big deal.

It isn't so much the lie itself, it's being lied to (by way of omission) that is problematic.

Seriously, yaar, shame on you and shame on Tom for the lack of transparency on these two breaks.

I want to collect boxes from sealed cases. I don't want what I call "Frankenstein" boxes, and what I mean by that is they are just a collection of packs put together in box form that didn't come that way out of the factory. Those types of boxes are not the same to me, I always assume they've been searched for stars on top or back, and I don't want that sort of stuff. Maybe I'm stupid or silly about that distinction, but I believe that boxes that are as they left the factory are worth more and are more collectible than the "Frankenstein" parts boxes. "Frankensteins" are like chicken nuggets to me - parts, parts, parts.

I saw these cases being auctioned a couple months back and didn't really have a lot of time to consider alternatives like organizing a group to buy and bust it or something similar, so I just bid (what I thought were pretty low bids I might add), but ended up winning. Surprise, surprise. But ultimately, after having enough time to really think about it I decided I really only wanted to collect 2-3 boxes of each. There's a few other years in the 80s I'm interested in as well (both baseball and football), but 2-3 boxes of each from sealed cases is what I'm really after at this point. I'm definitely not looking to be a case collector or some big time longer term investor in this stuff. I just want a nice, good looking collection of original factory stuff.

Thus, I reserved two boxes of each in this break so that I get the product in the form I really want to collect it in.

And yes, I do have to pay for it just like everyone else does. I think it's worth repeating - Tom sets the prices, not me.

I agree with Doug here. Had you been up front about your vested interest in coordinating this group break, instead of starting a thread under the guise that that you had no connection to the product to be arranged for sale, I don't think people would have had a problem with that.

The issue here really has nothing to do with boxes FASC or boxes not FASC.

I had 4 sets in different grades running under construction around that time. 3 of those are still going, that set was the only one I had "completed". I needed your card for an all 9 set that's about halfway together at the moment and getting harder every day.

There's no real "angle". I guess the "angle" on the break is I get the individual boxes in the form I want to collect them in, while getting rid of the others mostly at one time.

It's not like I'm getting over market on them, I didn't set the prices. From my perspective, they're honestly all underpriced (maybe not the 1975 mini box, but the case boxes for sure) based on what I see available from other sources and the utter lack of opportunities for people (including me) to be able to get involved in breaking a sealed case. But that's why I don't have anything to do with the pricing.
