I don't know a lot about the history of the PSA flip -- so I can't add to a thread like this.

Perhaps PSA (Carol) can chime in on this though. I think it's important for all collectors to know the history of the flip to help spot fakes.

    Thanks twiley!

I don't mind at all and thanks for the compliment, I enjoy it a lot. It's been published a couple of times now too, so that same image is out there quite a bit.

This would be a good thing for PSA to have on it's website...

It was the very first card that PSA graded/authenticated.

twiley, great thread. It is nice to see the evolution of the flip all in one thread. It would be great for someone from PSA to chime in and confirm and verify your findings.

The other difference in moving to what is labelled flip style 5 is that the white within the red borders on the flip is "squared off" rather than rounded. A minor difference, I like the way it looks better personally.

Thanks for re-posting this. Great and critical info. But, just to give credit where it's due, BosoxBlair - an in-frequent board member here - originally posted a PSA flip history similar to this, replete w/ graphics, several months ago. Should be in the archives.

The hologram isn't so much of a sticker as much as it is screen printed. It's raised like the PSA logo, but only ever so slightly.

It's on the outside, but it's not a sticker, it's bonded to the plastic the same way the white PSA logo is.

I've never seen this topic before.

    Superb job Tim!

It's time for PSA to reconsider their holders - both for security and esthetic reasons.

It would nice to give us another option on the color background for cards - a more "black" background for smaller cards like the T206?

Also - I think it's important that they come up with a more "TAMPER EVIDENT" flip and seal - some have reported popping the holder open with a fingernail.

    Just a thought.

Again - thanx! We can always use more threads like this!!!!!!

edit: later today I'll pull out some older and new flips and compare with your report.

I just quickly searched over at the registry forum and I saw at least one there from 2005.

    Started by Donato.

    Some decent answers there too.

    Hope that helps.

    Nice thread.

I haven't seen very many flip style 4's. Here's a Jackie Robinson, 1952 Topps PSA 9. Not mine...it was in a mastro auction, maybe in 2005? A card you don't see very often in PSA 9.

    image

I thought this kind of flip was an error. During the run of the PSA 3 to 5 flip. Its the only example of the grade number being off centered to the left. Why did PSA do this?

The flip 4 really stands out.

The robinson was in an SMR inside cover advertising mastros auction. My guess is maybe 1 out of 500 psa cards, 1 out of 1,000. You just never see them. You could run through a lot of auctions and never see them. 1 out of 5,000 cards or 10,000? I don't think I've ever seen a low grade flip 4. Maybe some got reholdered, because people thought they were fake?

Flip 1's are interesting.I'd be curious to know more about them and the grading standards. I think the only PSA graded Star basketball cards (1984-86) were in flip 1's. I remember seeing the long bar code on the XRC 1985 Star Jordan rookie. Standards have definitely changed since then.

On kind of a funny note I remember they(PSA) used to grade the tall boys and put them in Lin Terry
screwdowns with the label(flip) stuck to the holder.

DO you have any examples? I do not know much about tall boys. >>

Sorry I don't but I remember handling a Nameth rookie once many years ago.
Champs and Bums had it at show probably around 94? I don't think they had a holder
    for them until 2000ish?

Here are pics of the slabs with the light blue backs. No, that isn't my scanner making it look like that. The flip is actually light blue on the back! I have had several cards like that. Not very many......maybe it was just an error at the printer and they were stuck with them?

I could provide some scans of some odd ball cases if desired twiley. Like for disc, packs, and game-used. I also have a promo label, normal card, somewhere. Not sure if your wanting to expend it that much.
