Ever have a giveaway and then see the item being sold in the BST forum a short time later?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
I did recently.
It's up for sale in the BST right now.

What's interesting is that it was won under one ID and is being sold under another.
I am pretty certain it is the same coin as the IDs are only 1 letter different, come from the same town (in Canada) and have the same real name.

So, happen to anyone else?
I am ambivalent about it right now....

  • Does it really matter? You gave away the coin, it is their's to do with it as they please, weather that's keep it for their collection, give it to someone else, or sell it...

It is their's now, let them do with it as they please...

I haven't seen it done personaly, but that would be kind of tacky.
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!

    Wow, nice giveaway. image

I personally would have kept it.

I can't imagine being that blatant about it. I can somewhat understand unloading something that's not your "first choice" coin for something that's more in line with your collecting interests, but placing it on BST shortly after a board giveaway is pretty tacky, and if nothing else, I'd probably disqualify that person from future giveaways.
  • I agree it is tacky..... at least either wait a bit or sell it somewhere else... I would have kept it also.

Joking aside image , I do not have any problem with it. It would be an interesting question for a poll which perhaps would dictate future standards for this question.

    George,

Yes, it does matter. As Agflyer and Ziggy have posted, it is tacky. Sorry you don't understand that.

I wouldn't mind someone giving it away or even selling it, but to do it just a couple weeks after receiving it and doing it on the same board (different forum, same board) is not that cool...imho.
Now, if the person had waited a while or had done it elsewhere, it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

I just like to think that any giveaway I have will be appreciated and not just as something to make money off (if any knows of Fatwallet.com, then you have seen where good deals get closed quickly by self-serving people who turn around and ruin good deals just for the instant ebay profits).
I'd hate for this to occur all the time and then people stop giveaways because it just turns up on the BST forum anyway.....

Btw George....if they gave away the coin, that would be quite ok...pretty cool too. I would have ZERO problems with that. And, as stated, I wouldn't mind it being sold either....it is just HOW and WHEN. There is something called "couth".

RYK - you weren't supposed to post a pic of it...now everyone knows WHO and WHAT.... image
j/k....luckily it was a low $ item, but some people have given away more expensive items and, if I did that and someone immediately tried to flip it for $, then I would be upset.

  • at first I was ambivilant then I looked at this again and went to bst, actually I am p'd.... poor taste at minimum

I once had a giveaway that was later listed in a Yahoo auction. Didn't bother me any.

I think it's in extremely poor taste, whether done in the open/blatantly or secretively and even if it is within their rights.

I'd much prefer to see someone give away a gift/giveaway than sell it, if, for whatever reason, they don't wish to keep it.

Agreed. If I didn't really much care for the coin being offered, I'd not even enter the giveaway. And if I changed my mind or my collecting interests were changing, or if I won but not the coin I really "wanted," I might -- eventually -- recycle the coin as a giveaway in the future or thank the giver for their generosity but ask that they pick another winner.

And on the off-chance that I DID eventually sell it to raise money for other collecting interests -- I certainly wouldn't do it on BST or do it shortly after winning it -- much less doing BOTH. That shows me nothing but a desire to profit on the part of the person who won the item, which to me is totally contrary to the spirit of the giveaway. I don't think I'd feel right about selling a giveaway item.

It's a rather tacky way to repay someone's generosity.

If I don't want the coin,I don't enter the giveaway. If I did win a coin I did not want I would either tell the giver to pick another or give it away myself.

I think it is a bit tacky too....I'm with Bochiman. I have given away many coins in the past couple of months (to YN's and adults) because it makes me feel good. It would be tough knowing that someone else is taking advantage of my generosity to make a profit.

Kudos to those (like Russ) that don't let it get to them.

  • I am going to go with George on this one.....once I give something away.......it is up to the new owner what he or she does with it. can't fault any of you for your beliefs....and personally...I have never tried to sell a giveaway item....but I have given away quite a bit of stuff over the years and personally know of several items that were sold in short order........but the bottom line is...If I give something to someone it is becuase I try to be a thoughtful person and I like to share with others.

I don't think that makes me better than anyone else....but someone selling something I gave them does not deminsh the act of me giving them the item in anyway....Just my 2 cents image

I think it's tacky. I have a box full of coins given to me over the years, and I would never dream of selling one.

Not a real classy thing. I'm kinda glad I don't check that board as I've given away quite a few coins.

  • Wow. Do a search for the userid that won for every forum in the past 90 days. He hasn't posted a single thing to any thread except to enter giveaways. And he uses two ids at once? I thought CU only wanted you to have one id at a time. Seems especially nefarious when the guy only uses the altid to double his chances of winning a giveaway.

While this is not something I would do, it doesn't surprise me that someone else would.

I also searched Bochiman's recent contest and see that this member entered his contest twice under two ID's and then I found a third ID for him - so what is that, an alt-alt ID?
  • tacky to the extreme!!! Give it away to a YN if you dont want it. Dont try to make money off of someone else's good nature.

Would someone care to name this individual so I can block them from any giveaways I might do in the future?

Well that's not fair. Destroys the whole idea of a giveaway. I too feel it tacky to sell a coin one wins in a giveaway. Perhaps after a long long time, but certainly not days or weeks or months after. What are his ID's?

I keep all of my give-aways

I mark the date and the person it came from on them too so it doesn't get mixed up with the rest.

It's tacky for sure but thems the breaks. All I know is that the best coin ever given to me by a member who hasn't posted in a long time won't be sold. So far I've held it for 2 years and don't plan on selling for 20+.

Tacky, tacky, tacky. If someone gave me something, I'd be sure to keep it (PS - don't, cuz then I'll have to keep it).
  • ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,785 ✭✭✭✭
I want to know who it is. Very poor taste in my opinion.

Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • well, it IS his to do with has he pleases...but....

IMO it's pretty damn rude to BST it so fast. I think the person dont care about the collecting, he just sees $$.

I would want to give someone a coin that appreciates it, not sees it for $$. Lack of class.

and this other ID thing....something is wrong there....

I do agree that the pattern of behavior for this indivdual is repulsive. Using multiple id's to win giveaways and not otherwise participating here in a positive way. image

That said, if anyone ever wins a giveaway from me and wants to sell it, please feel free. Lately, I have been giving away books and auction catalogs, which are less liquid than coins, but IMO, a better gift.

Anything given to me goes right to my son Jack's collection (except for some Frankies that Lucy once gave to my daughter). He is six years old, so he probably won't be selling it anytime soon. However, in a few years, when there is pressure to buy video games, music, etc., I cannot vouch for him. image

Ok...Xpipe is down for tacky image

I actually had forgotten how smart/quick people here are and purposely did not name the individual (yes, my contest could be searched, but I wasn't thinking of that at the time).
    I didn't know about the 3rd ID...wow!

I didn't even see the 2nd ID in the contest as I purposely ignored the names of those who entered and just focused on the winning time so I wouldn't be prejudiced against somebody if they won and I didn't like them.

As mentioned...once someone wins and receives the item, it is theirs....I did NOT place any stipulation on what could be done. But, anybody who doesn't think it is in poor taste or tacky to just turn around and try to flip it on the same board that the person giving the item away frequents as well, is just fooling themselves or likely is someone who would do the same. Right? You would, wouldn't you? image

Just makes me sad, is what it does. Doesn't make me mad. I am not ranting and raving and kicking up a fuss. It happened. But, it is sad, to me.
Everything that I have one...in my own name or for my son, goes straight to his part of the collection. I don't get rid of anything we have won.
If I did, it would go to another YN or new collector. I have no desire to sell it.

Heck, the particular coin in question is one of 3 that I got from Cam a couple years ago at a low price (average really, but low enough to not worry). They started my birthyear set. And, because I bought them from a forum member, for a particular reason TO ME, I didn't try to sell them. I figured I would give one away and hope it ended up in good hands.

    Oh well.

Anyway, I am not trying to lynch anyone here. I was trying to see if this had happened before or if it was just me....and also wondering the general feeling behind it.

Would someone kindly PM the party involved in this? In currently involved in sending out several giveaways, and I'd like to know who it is.
  • CrackoutCrackout Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do a search under the ID's of YC, RYC, and YCCY9229 and you will see that he enters all the giveaways multiple times.

And I see where these "better" odds have allowed him to win from Shimmy as well!

    YCCY9229 the winner!

What a scumbag. Giveaways are for those who would enjoy the item. YN's, new collectors, those without much means. The thought of someone entering a giveaway with the intent of flipping the coin makes me sick. There are too many others who would have loved to have won. I can feel my blood pressure rising as I am completely outraged.
  • XpipedreamRXpipedreamR Posts: 8,059 ✭✭
    Interesting...
  • A third ID? So his chances of winning a give-away are at least three times better than anyone elses. That ain't just tacky; it's unethical.

Well, that wasn't the case, i.e., multiple entries, in my YN giveaway, because everyone who entered will get something...but WTF? I'm going to send him inventory?

    What do you think?
