Among the 17 bids, there had to be two bidders who didn't know what they were doing. That price is insane.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I hope nobody who posts here won it for that price. It's a $20 coin if cracked out of the holder. I don't see any Snow variety to make it worth that price. I guess it's their money and they can spend it as they please, but I won't be joining them in pursuing this fad.
<< <i>This is not good advertising for PCGS since this is the new UGLY for AU58+. Either someone has a weird bucket list or offed himself while bidding and fell on to the bid key >>
There's a good chance that the full visual focus was just on the label and the coin itself was never even glanced at?
Honestly I so dumbfounded seeing this that I'm too mentally paralyzed to post anything really witty!

Wow, MJH is right- a veritable 1901-S Indian cent with the S below the date! Pro'lly came out of the estate of the San Francisco mint director himself! Will be the next $10 million coin for certain!
<< <i>But no, seriously, the buyer is buried @ $1400. >>
So you think the greater fool theory has run its course on this coin? I can just see the fellow walking it around a bourse sometime down the road, soliciting offers "well I'm in at $1400....how close are we?"
I guess it is no more insane than paying $1400 for a P-01 1877 Indian cent or a MS-70 Silver Eagle. To some people the registry ranking is worth the extra $$.
I think the (+) was given because of the spot. Coins that are given the (+) designation are required to trade sight-unseen on CCE. In a perverse twist, PCGS graders label coins with spots with a (+) so that they trade, because otherwise they would be rejected.

Rick, thanks for providing my entertainment for the day. This is a type coin, and I believe a no-problem type IHC in a PC MS 65 RD holder goes for between $400 and $500. Please correct me if I am mistaken. I am also under the impression that this coin probably isn't worth $100. Are there any scarce varieties for the date? I don't think so, but I don't pay attention to this sort of thing.

Feeling a lot better about the five AU 58's that came back in my recent submission And I had been hoping for that price jump into the low MS grades on these "sliders".
These couple of threads about 58's taking moon money are both entertaining and worrysome! I don't take part in the registry, I'm just not a very competetive guy I guess.... I just like great looking coins.... and IMO, this coin just isn't that nice looking...
Each to their own I guess.

the sentment here seems to focus on the OP coin's (+)
did any of yours have a fortunate + added to its number?

58+ must be one darn hard grade to get for the date, not to justify such a price
is it a Snow variety too?
is 58+ the new ms70!

Does PCGS award (+) to coins with spots on purpose? Perhaps to make them trade sight unseen?

Oh. OK.
I was confused for a sec, 'cause when I read the title, my brain inserted an extra word.
I thought you said, AU-58+ Indian cent set sells for $1400+
That would've been the cherrypick of the century, perhaps.
Just looked at the link. A 1901 ?!? Man, that IS insane.
Maybe if it had been one of those errors struck on a quarter-eagle planchet...
The technical term for this is "Stupid Money"
I am sending in every AU55-MS62 1901 IHC I can find.
If you magnify it by 400% it looks kind of like an S Mintmark.

I would suggest sending in every 58+ of any denomination, if this is the new fad. Take the money and run, guys.

Need any more Au58+ coins? If you want spots, that may be doable too (I would need a couple of hours in my lab).

But paying stupid /stupid money for registry points (or for a holder (when its a coin that's literally worthless) is just plain dumb IMO.
Personally, I do not participate in the registry, I just as well nobody know what I have

Same goes for the Lowball registry. Anything that creates a situation where a coin is "worth" more in a lower grade is not good, IMO.
