1942 Mercury Overdate Question

ZoharZohar Posts: 6,678 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi all. I am a darkside collector and cleared my old US lower grade set I had collected as a kid. I have 2 pieces of the 1942 Mercury Dimes which I wrote down as 1942/1 Overdate. Could get closer with the camera zoon,

Can anyone advise if this is the case? Unclear to me. Thanks a bunch.

Will do - how long should I keep it in there?

top one maybe too much gunk but I think I see a one, the second one no way, its a very obvious over date you can't miss it.
    Positive BST transactions:michaeldixon,nibanny,

15 mins...the top coin (easy one to id)
really looks like you may have a score...but the gunk throws off positive id
please wait for others to chime in as this could be a big coin.
do a consensus on approach with this "gunk"

Thanks guys. Its bathing. Will yank it out in a few. Does this stuff come out or needs to be wiped? Best.
  • lasvegasteddylasvegasteddy Posts: 10,432 ✭✭✭
never wipe,,,only pat dry coins my friend...acetone evaporates...hot water under sink could aide this too...image

Here are a couple of images from my variety resource pages. The first coin is hard to see. Your second coin does look like a 42/1-D

Use these images to compare to your coin.

The second one is the "D", it's less obvious! His second one is a 42/1 D.

I expected such an outcome from the original photo.

    Thank you all so much.

I got them as a kid 28 years ago and had these in simple flips. I had sold all my US coins 5 years ago and somehow these were set aside. They were both marked as overdates which a 13 year old did not really know much about. I dont have a clue about the cost then yet it was within my budget.

What are these valued at? What is the story behind this overdate?

  • ZoharZohar Posts: 6,678 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is the second one after the bath. Not sure if I clearly see the overdate.

Looks to me like you have 2 winners here.
    Nice re-finds.

    Looks like both are.
Looking at the "cleaned" images, definitely looks like both are.

For the 2nd one, look at the bottom of the 4...to the left. That seems to be the PUP for me.

    Cool deal

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Amazing. Congrats.

(The 1942/1-D is tricky - nowhere near as obvious as the Philly).

Very nice that you saved those coins! Raw they'll probably sell $300-$400 each.

    The 42/1 is the coolest!

Great finds... and in your own stash... very cool. Acetone does wonders with organic gunk. Cheers, RickO

    Perhaps send for grading?
    Not so low grade.

I always search for that 42/1-D. It's not easy to pickup unless you're looking for it unlike the 42/1. I've found a couple of the 42/1-D's (both sold now unfortunately) and I also found this 42/1 which is one of my favorite coins.

Not the prettiest example, but for a find from a bag of melt coins, not bad at all image

  • Looks good..... a quick note.... after 25 years+ in the business. The 1942/1 D is around 10 times more rare than the 1942/1 P.
I could always find about 10 to one at any show.
    Any thoughts?

I think its about demand.....the 42/1 is much more obvious and more popular.

I think it's just that the 42/1-D is a much harder coin to pick. The 42/1 is so obvious is was discovered right away. I don't think the 42/1-D was discovered until years later. Fun coin to look for though. I love looking for 42 Merc overdates.

Got word from NGC confirming these both as overdates - grades as follows:

    001 1942/41 D 10C VF 25
    002 1942/41 10C VF 35

    Any idea regarding value?
