U.S Coin Forum virtual Complete U.S. Type Coin Set (1792-1964).

I wiled away the busy hours at work today thinking about coins. Luckily for me and my employer, my position isn't so cerebral that it requires constant mental attention. I can in effect "walk and chew gum at the same time" while I go about my tasks. Todays topic in my mind centered around Type Sets, more specifically, the daunting task of assembling a Complete Type Set of United States Coinage. That goal has intrigued me ever since I began collecting and I still am held in fascination when I consider what the owner of the High Desert Collection has accomplished. But, to the point.
In my short tenure at this Forum I feel I've been priveleged to view some fantastic coins, some awe inspiring coins. I've seen them in threads, in my own little greedy hands and in the showcases of member dealers. I've even managed to acquire some stellar coins as a direct result of my participation within this community. My idea is for the U.S. Coin Forum members to pool their collections to come up with a Complete U.S. Type Coin Set (1792-1964) which could be posted with pictures of the representative coins within a thread. I've thought through some guidelines that would help make the venture as inclusive and as diverse as possible, but I didn't want to get into any specifics until there was a general concensus that the idea was worthwhile.
I'd welcome any replies or PM's, basically to find out who would be interested. To that end, I had felt structuring the set along the PCGS Registry Set composition would be best and it limits the set to 134 coins and 134 members. That would essentially limit any participant to one coin.
Thanks in advance for your response.

I'd kick in a coin from my Major Gold Type Set. Since I had it pedigreed, they would be the only ones I could plan on keeping.
Which would bring up another problem - what about when people sell the coins in the set?
LordM had collected a Virtual Type set.
Maybe somebody could host a web site for a virtual type set photo collection everyone could add to?

I volunteer a fellow forum member to contribute his 1942 Type 2 Jeff in PR 66 DCAM. Hmmm, maybe I should ask him first?
High Desert his own self used to pipe in on the Registry forum. Perhaps we can save him for the last to fill in a hard to find spot. This is because he can fill in any spot with a top pop coin.
I'm sure Bill Jones can come up with a neat early coin!
I'm not sure I can offer anything at this point. I've sold off my best coins...
Why not register the set? We can list the owner of the coin in the comments section. Oh, I guess they can't list a coin in two different complete type sets so that probably won't work...
you may have misunderstood. this is an endeavor solely for the enjoyment and shared appreciation of members here, along with that of any lurkers or visitors. my thoughts are to have an initial thread post with the guidelines and basic PCGS Set Composition that i could edit in bold type with the members ID as we add coin pictures to the virtual set. the pictures could be in individual posts by the owner or in some other agreed format.

With all the cool coins here selecting just one for each type is going to be tough.
Great idea, but I believe the 1792-1964 Dream collection already exists, it's just a matter of everyone piping into a central location to stake their claims and posting pictures. Since everyone is really not centrally local to such a given ideate, the odds are slim.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

<< <i>Neat idea. I am not sure I have anything worthy of contributing, but it will be fun to watch it evolve. >>
Yeah Robert, you got nothing worthy. Yeah.
i'm not sure i have a coin to contribute either, but keeping in line with that oft repeated forum mantra, contribute the coin and not the holder. my initial thought is to initially limit each participating member to one coin, start things at a pre-determined/announced time and have each individual "hole" filled on a first-come-first-served basis. think about it, how many will think to contribute a Morgan Dollar, but how many will be listing a Three-Dollar Gold??
i'm assuming with a good number of members participating, there should be some stunning coins, and i can hardly wait till we figure out how to upgrade!!!!

I would take your idea one step further and actually entering a type set in the PCGS Registry in the name of the US Coin Forum.
I would be happy to host the site and put together the web page if that would help.

<< <i>i think i should be able to have the time to get some guidelines and the thread started for Saturday or Sunday, just in time for the holiday. i'm wondering if it should be exclusively PCGS coins?? any thought's on that or anything else that might help the idea work better?? >>

Great idea, and I'd be happy to contribute, as well. How about polling for the "standards"? Personally, I'd like to see the set contain both PCGS and NGC, and even ANACS. Plenty may feel otherwise. Maybe a "voting in" process for additions to the registry? If X% of participants approve of the coin's quality, regardless of slab label, it's in. Just a thought.

Some are concerned about stolen cert #'s, so show the coin & not the slab. The coin is the focus, not who slabbed it.
This would be an outstanding educational project for all.
Joe
As for the grading set, I'll give you my grades, which may or may not match up with what's on the slab.
i'm also trying to get a thread locked on page one over the weekend to give maximum exposure and access. i think Sunday at High Noon PDT would be a good launch window, so get them pictures ready!!

Me, too. It was one of the beautiful things about my job. Sadly, new management came along and the gravy days are numbered.
High Desert used to post here, back in the days when I was a newbie.
