Who would have thought this Ebay listing was a scam?

I had my doubts, but still bid, though I was not the "winning" bidder. The fact that this legitimate looking listing turned out to be a scam is especially disturbing/scary to me.

I never bid when I see this:

    Payment methods accepted
    Personal check
    Money order/Cashiers check

There has to be a way of using a credit card (PayPal or direct) on a coin of this value.

How do you know it was a scam? I'm confused by the feedback, if the auction ended on May 16th how can he expect delivery already?
  • I can see the concern but is it possible this was the true owner of the coin ?

Either way i think the winner left feedback too quickly (unless he has info none of us have)

  • No pic of the front of the holder? I always like to check the cert number from the holder itself. Coins of this high value need some sort of provenance with them before I will even look at them. Doen't need to be lengthy just a short history of how the coin got into their hands and enough information to verify the story.

Exactly. Auction ended May 16th, negative feedback left May 17th. image Almost seems personal.

Mark, do you have any other details that we may not know about?

    Joe.

Edit: I see additional info which explains why it was a scam. I agree that there are red flags and would never bid on such an auction it just was not apparent that it truly was a scam based on the timing of the auction close and feedback.

The negative feedback left by the winning bidder (who I know personally), included a reference to an Ebay item number for a previous listing of the SAME coin.

The previous listing of the coin was also a scam - the winning bidder of the previous listing paid and never received the coin from the previous seller (who is no longer a registered user).

Apparently, someone must have alerted the latest winning bidder to the scam(s), so he immediately left negative feedback to warn/protect others.

Thanks for the clarification. That is wierd. 146 feedback seem like a lot to work up before trying a scam.
  • Never ceases to amaze me.......why would anyone who buys the high end stuff ever take a chance on ebay unless it was a buyer they knew. Seems like there are so many scams out there. Makes me gald that I only collect cheap A$$ modern crap.

Perhaps this statement at the end of the auction description provides a clue:

YOU WILL RECEIVE E-MAIL REGARDING PAYMENT & SHIPPING DURING 12 HOURS SO PLEASE DO NOT E-MAIL US OR CHECKOUT FIRST!

I looked at the previous auctions by this seller. Only the last one was still viewable, but it did not include this statement.

Maybe this account has been hijacked?

  • I suppose very few collectors from here would bid on such an auction, given the risk. It's a shame that so many people are taken advantage of everyday on Ebay. From what I gather from the comments here, Ebay generally doesnt seem too concerned, so long as they get their fee's.

Excellent point, Ken. I do believe it to be yet another hijacked account.

The only numismatic stuff I've ever purchased on eBay has been modern commemorative sets from dealers who had a few thousand positive feedbacks with a 99%++ rating. I'd never buy an expensive old coin from someone on there unless I know them personally and have done business with them at the shows.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
