Not going to call into question what they claim was taken but why you would have that type of inventory in your vehicle and then go park at the casino is beyond me. I go on vacation with my family and carry all electronic, metal detector etc. into the hotel every night wherever we stop.
This one is an obvious lapse of judgment IMO
Sure hope they get it back and catch whoever did it
Here is an NTC slab I have. Anyone willing to pay the list of $16500 by chance?!

Of course, that's assuming that this story is even legit. Folks with gambling issues have been known to do strange things to generate income to cover losses. I don't know this guy or the specifics; just saying.

<< <i>You know...I'm sorry when anyone gets ripped off... but frankly anyone who prioritizes going gambling over securing their inventory and leaves their stuff in the car at the casino gets little to no sympathy from me.

He has some high value items when he is doing shows I have attended (not absurdly high value like some dealers have, but still a good chunk of change).
Many times, he does shows with his mother, who deals coins as well, but since he is the only one listed here, it looks like he may have been traveling solo.
Not sure if he stopped at the casino for food (buffet could be enticing) or gambling, or both, so I won't make the assumption. I will say that I shake my head that he would have that all with him and make a stop like that, for any reason.
Likely leaving a Washington show to head back home to Oregon. Doesn't have a date so not sure of which show.
Like I said, a young guy, and likely a trusting one to a degree.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I know him. While I would question parking at a casino I would not go deeper with any of the above assumptions.
<< <i>Casinos generally have a LOT of surveillance cameras, and usually some are covering the parking lots. >>
So very, very true. Perhaps a good tool leading to an arrest.

Fair enough; that's why I was quick to point out that I don't know him.
That said, I do know a now-former bank trust officer who concealed his gambling problem from everyone until it was discovered that he'd been raiding trust accounts to cover losses. Just saying that it can and does happen on occasion.

I'm also wondering if prices were cost or retail.
Hmmmmmmmm.....
The numbers are estimates of retail.
I am in contact with the dealer and providing feedback to him as the investigation of facts continues.
It would be best to not make assumptions as the investigation has just begun and is ongoing.

I just called some other dealers up in OR and they had not heard of this as of 5:00pm Mountain time, but will be on the lookout.

<< <i>I do not know the details, but if they were left unattended in a car, it is very hard to have sympathy. NTC Coins? Sure this is not an insurance scam? >>
Yes, this is not a scam. He is a young but well respected member of the numismatic community. He is known by quite a few reputable people here, and is a very upstanding person. He has a pretty good natural eye and will buy coins he likes no matter the holder, as long as the price is right for what it really is.
Nice guy and I wish him the best in this matter.

I agree. Although the victim and I are not exactly buddies I would be shocked if gambling issues had anything to do with it.

Thieves seem to have become very adept at following their prey and striking at vulnerable moments. We can all learn from this. I hope there was video in the parking area that will yield useful information to the authorities.

From dating back a few ANA's ago, I heard from some credible sources his mother attempted "pursing" a certified gold piece from a dealer only to be discovered in her purse when said dealer in question found out it was missing. It was an "Oops, it had to have fallen in by accident" excuse. Wishing him well, but I'm just not sure. This incident seems dubious.
I hope this dealer receives a good lesson from this.
<< <i>The Emerald Queen Casino would be the last place on earth that you would want to park your car with a coin stores inventory in it. This place has one of the biggest parking lots in Tacoma, about 15 acres and uses shuttles to shuffle people back and forth from their cars to the Casino. In our local newspaper there have been articles lately about how the homeless people are using this huge parking lot to live at camping out in their cars. They have noticed a surge in car thefts in this area and are beefing up security to try and catch these people doing this.
I hope this dealer receives a good lesson from this. >>
Anyone else find it odd that someone who supposedly doesn't gamble would park a car full of coins in the middle of a casino's 15 acre parking lot, particularly when said lot is evidently well known for dodgy people milling about who like breaking into cars...?

I just know that, no matter what, it is a horrible loss and Revick is surely devastated by this, whether he had insurance or not. Other than being held up in person, it's a coin dealer's worst nightmare. We try to do our best to protect ourselves and our inventory, and this could (and has) happened to even the most experienced coin dealers. It is certainly not for us to say woulda, coulda, shoulda at this point. Revick knows what he woulda, shoulda, coulda done differently and is most likely being harder on himself right now than anyone. He is a really good guy and could use our support and help in keeping an eye out for the coins, rather than judgment and condemnation.

I guess it would help to find out if the story is even true?! He doesn't gamble, but parked at a casino. NTC coins worth 23 grand. 5 - penny through dime books worth 50 grand. Etc. (And it is not listed on that website referenced, or in a google search as far as I can tell.)
RIP Mom- 1932-2012
<< <i>I'm sure everyone here wishes him well and hopes that this is resolved. And by the sound of it he's apparently a great guy, family man, kind to his mother, etc...but that doesn't change the fact that no one here knows the specifics of what exactly went on. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out... but all I know is that "he's a great guy" really doesn't answer any of the questions raised thus far... jmho >>

Hello Everyone, this is Revick Galstaun with West Coast Coins in Oregon.
I'd first like to say thank you for all of the support from my friends, fellow dealers and collectors. Especially, the messages my friends have posted have meant the world to me during this difficult time.
Also, I'd like to give a special thanks to Doug Davis with NCIC for reaching out to so many people about this situation.
After reading some posts on this PCGS forum board I it felt necessary to include some facts about the recent theft at the Emerald Casino in Tacoma, WA. I've seen some faulty conclusions drawn, but from the lack of information provided it is more than understandable. I'm going to try and be as brief as possible, but here are some facts about this case:
Case Information:
My mother, Katie Galstaun has been helping me on a weekly basis in the office with my coin business. After a period of time of good results, I entrusted my mother and her boyfriend to set-up at a small one-day coin show in Kent, WA. Despite my explicit instructions to the contrary, she has told me that they stopped at a Casino with video surveillance as well as security on site on the way home after the show. However, this does not make this action by any means acceptable.
She has done many shows with me in the past and knows that rule #1 is we never leave valuables unattended. However, this is what she has told me has happened. I'm requesting video surveillance from the casino as well as other stops that were made to put the facts together.
NTC Coins:
A few members have mentioned that the NTC coins in value were excessive but in determining this it would be necessary to see them in hand. Most educated dealers/collectors would agree this is not a reputable grading service and you should always grade the 'coin' and not the 'holder'. I agree the values were high on this list. However, I was focused on gathering as much information as possible for Doug Davis to reach out to people as soon as possible. Please take prices into consideration on all the other items as well to have an accurate assessment of the value we determined and note these are estimated retail prices.
Insurance:
I have also read that members are thinking this is a possible 'insurance scam', however, as another member mentioned I doubt many companies would insure leaving this type of value in a casino parking lot. The facts are this is not an insurance scam but a terrible decision made by someone I was trying to help, that I thought was helping me, and whom I was giving a second chance to, my Mother. Obviously I made a bad mistake in doing so.
Additional Information:
Please note that additional information on exactly what has been stolen is available upon request. If you have any comments/questions on this situation please feel free to contact me at: westcoastcoinman@gmail.com. I"m happy to provide any information possible and to answer any questions that I can.
Thank You,
Revick Galstaun
Glenn again.
I would point out that Revick has moved some 1300 coins from "Active" on eBay to "Completed/Not Sold" which took some time to do but obviously these coins are missing and not available. If someone wants to take the time and take a look, the $ amount of these listings matches the retail estimate he came up with. Again this was for the purpose of getting an active list out there as soon as possible. For we all know the sooner you get the information out there the better your chances of something turning up.
I may post further on Revick's behalf if posts suggest it may be good to do so for clarification or to further any sort of recovery of the stolen/missing coins. As a fellow dealer and friend, I am happy to help him in any way I possibly can.

I always shake my head at forum members who are so perfect and without fault that they jump at any and every post to say how bad someone did something and how it should have been done...and how it is probably a scam.
This is a double blow on Revick, I am sure, as it is not just the inventory and monies, but also the fact it was his mother doing something against his voiced objections which will undoubtedly hurt family dynamics to a point.
Hope all those that nitpicked at the NTC/values/casino bit are happy with themselves. No need to apologize to Revick for the voiced doubts even when you didn't know the facts nor the man behind this.

<< <i>Frankly given the lack of info early on, most of the questions posed were valid...something acknowledged by Revick himself.
Hope those being smug right now don't get a nosebleed up on the old high horse. Pot, kettle and all that. >>
It wasn't the questions...it was HOW they were presented. And, I would disagree with you with that being the point.
Nothing wrong with questions....some were quite there about "insurance scams", etc. That was NOT a valid question, imho. That was negativity and jumping into a dogpile.

Let's keep our eyes open for the inventory!
Revick took a lot of hits from the keyboard commandos on the first two pages. The truth has been revealed. How about rallying and doing what we are known for -- supporting one of our members ????
Sorry for what has happened, but knowing Revick, and his relations, this is possible. Now, let's rally around one of the good guys, and help all we can.
