Sad News - Pete "DaNutt" Bishal
Frank Leone, quoted from the CONECA home page. This was also reported to a couple of mailing lists by Rich Schemmer, who was in attendance at this show: << <i>October 12, 2003 -- Pete "DaNutt" Bishal passed away on the morning of October 12th, 2003. Pete was attending the WESPNEX coin show in New York and died from an… -
Re: Most sought error type?
<< <i> << <i> << <i> << <i> << <i>Probably the doubled die. . . >> A doubled die is not an error...it is a variety. >> Actually, its both unless the mint purposely made the die with doubling. >> The die itself IS a mint error...if you can talk the mint out of the cancelled die then and only then would you have an example… -
Re: Third Side of a coin-1809 O-107a CBH
The edge lettering of Bust Half Dollars was applied to the blank planchet via the Castaing Machine before the coin was struck. The Castaing Machine had 2 long rectangular bars (called edge dies) spaced apart. The distance was slightly less than the standard diameter of the blank planchet. On the standard set of edge dies… -
Re: When a PCGS 1972 "Doubled Die" really isn't... (photos)
<< <i>NONE of the doubled dies are "mint errors." PCGS should learn this and update the way they do things. >> Chuck, It is interesting how different collectors have different interpretations as to what is a mint error and what is a mint variety. I have my own. I believe a mint variety is a coin in which the mint INTENDED… -
Re: Grading Lincoln Wheat Cents Questions:
The surfaces on the 68 have an “orange peel” quality and I’m sure look phenomenal in-hand. The 65 has several decent gouges on Lincoln’s coat (lapel and shoulder) and cheek. One important thing to note is that the dies were redesigned over the years, so comparing a 1917 and a 1950s issue may lead to false conclusions, esp.… -
Re: Very interesting Double-struck 1965 Washington Quarter on Ebay
<< <i> It is a fake error produced with false dies. Take a normal coin, squeeze it in a bench vise between two strips of aluminum to create impressions that look like dies, move the coin relative to the impressions and squeeze again. Some of the coin will form up into the impressions like a second strike, though there is… -

Re: I believe the hobby has lost a dedicated collector...
"...That's the unnerving part for me. It's easy to say "he died doing what he loved", but I doubt he loved being trapped in the deep snow until exposure took him after surviving a free fall. ..." //////////////////////////////////////////// The Coast Guard and other rescue workers have "serious doubts" that he survived the… -
Does the following description make any sense?
Here's the link! And here's the description; Nice luster and well struck from what appear to be late state dies, rough slightly golden surfaces and low relief on Monticello. Right off, I'll tell you that I don't agree with it. What would a weakly struck coin look like from what appear to be late state dies How can anyone… -
Re: Post your comments on these 1898 Half Dollars: COUNTERFEIT & REAL
Yes, a contemorary counterfeit from false dies. The dies were made from scratch! The star positions and the depth of the LIBERTY give it away. The coin is struck on good silver and has a very good clear ring. The wear pattern on it look very normal, not like it was artificially worn down. At the time the price of silver…
