Anyone know J. William Ross?
J. William Ross was a dealer in coins, tokens and medals, located in the Grant Building in Pittsburgh, PA. I just picked up an old piece that came with a paper with his name and address on it so I was curious to learn more about him. It is an exonumia piece and apparently back in 1966 he was interested in exonumia as well.… -

Re: Rusted die vs. porous planchet -- how can you tell the difference?
No examples, but a porous coin has small pits, while a coin struck from a rusted die would have little "pimples" - the pits in the die caused by rust would be raised on the coin. -
1859 Rush to the Rockies - Uniface Private Strike - HK-544
I'm an avid fan of the Rush to the Rockies So-Called Dollar issue by the US Mint, but I didn't know about the uniface HK-544 until I just ran across this one from Ancient Galleon LLC / ancientgalleonllc. Rust is the wrong word to use if you want to make a corrosion metaphor with silver coins. I'd liken the corrosion you see on a silver coin to the bluing process you see on gun steel.
