Re: Dan Carrs latest

The "split head" is actually a mis-aligned over-strike. The apparent gash down the middle of the head is actually the edge of the bison's head from the original host coin. I try and align the obverse over-strike as best I can (even then, some are off a little). Since numerous Bison nickels come with some amount of rotated… -
Where are the 1806 dimes?

What happened to the 1806 dimes? I once read somewhere that indeed there were 1806 dated dies found at the mint but supposedly never used. Does anyone have any theories as to why they were not used or the possibility they did get used and the coins were melted. Does the 1806 dime fall into the same category of the 1931… -
Re: 2000-D SAC $1 multiple errors
That explains a lot. In my experience, this is a fairly common engineer’s mindset when approaching coins. Engineers are trained to analyze problems logically and work toward rational explanations, which is often a strength in numismatics as well. The problem is that, when that mindset is combined with limited experience in… -
Re: Things people THOUGHT would matter, but really don't....
Mint mark varieties. Never really picked up steam, even with classic coins. Also minor double dies have never really cought on, though big ones like the 1c 1955 DDO will always be popular. I think that plus grades may fall by the wayside eventually as grading either moves toward more technical (decimal grading) or more… -
Re: Jeter's 3000th hit ball...whats it worth?
lol No I would not pay to shake anyone's hand. I was only saying the ball could be worth up to a million. If I was the one who caught it. I would give it back and only want a handshake out of it. Yeah my wife would probably divorce me over it but eh. Like someone posted over on the "Rangers fan falls and died" thread. "Its… -
Re: A Question about minting coins...
I have been on numerous floor tours at the Denver Mint and we have been able to touch the coins as they fall out of the coining chamber. The coins are hot, not burning hot but very warm for the first few seconds in your hand. I imagine the dies are much hotter but the metal can take hundreds of degrees of heat and it… -
Re: 1993 Topps Finest Refractors Set
GoSoxBoSox; Got any Candy Lids to grade? Maybe a 74 Deckle? There's an old saying about Ryan collectors: "If you grade it, they will come. Ooooooh, they will most definitely come." BTW... are you the same Tom Papa that has a sitcom airing this fall on one of the networks? I think the name of the show is "Papa Don't… -

Re: What other hobbies do you mix with coin collecting?
youngster at work was horsing around and caused me to fall; had witnesses, thank goodness, it was a federal employee who caused me to get injured. At least feds paid medical bills, but they haven't done anything for extended rehab and/or physical therapy; loss of wage-earning ability, etc.; they'd just as soon you crawled… -
Re: "Unlike others, we tell you what we pay - At $1,100 per ounce you should not accept less than $
Had a guy in today with a very heavy "white gold" man's bracelet. He said it was his grandmother's, but she died. These are known fakes that started turning up in Florida last Fall, and are now appearing all over the country. The thing is, they pass the basic scratch and acid test. Now we just don't buy white gold, except…
