Bessemer Show Day One - A Wealth of Knowledge

Well - tonite I got my fill of Southern Gold and Tone dollars to satisfy even the most ravenous of coin appetites. I finally got to meet GSAGUY in person and he's a great guy to hang out with. He showed me some of his "cute" Morgan Dollars and they left you breathless. Each time he opened a box you thought there couldn't… -
A different kind of fake coin fooled the ancients in Italy
Great fakers scammed ancient Italy An old lead coin looks like it was plated with silver. Philip Ball An ingenious counterfeit-coin scam has been rumbled by scientists in Italy. But no one is going to jail, because the forgers lived more than 2,000 years ago. Giuseppe Giovannelli of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and… -
Re: Silver was valued more highly than Gold in ancient times.
There's actually ample evidence that there was extensive trade even before the great pyramids were built around 2800 BC. The great value for silver in Egypt and the southern Levant was quite likely a holdover from more ancient times when gold was relatively plentiful in Egypt and silver and electrum much less so. It's… -
Re: What is your second set? What is your first set?

I think the Nero is this: That's pretty amazing, also in great condition! I'm very impressed with your $2 1/2 set! Almost no one has the fortitude to collect a date range like that. i have studied the $2 1/2's some. Many don't know how rare your 1866 and 1867 are! The 1881 and 1885 are awesome. The 1842-D and 1845-OIare… -
Charmy's September 2014 SANTA CLARA COIN SHOW REPORT w/Pics!!

I missed the last Santa Clara show since it conflicted with the Central States show that I attended, so I was happy to be back in Northern California. Scott Griffin works really hard to put on a top quality show, with spacious aisles and nice little “extras” like an auction, raffles for free and discounted tables, dealer… -
Re: Doug Winter blog-- are unusual dates irrelevant, and the world is divided between rare coins and wid
<< <i>bidask, When I was a rookie gold coin collector, I went through the same thought process: be a contrarian, buy interesting dates before others discover them, etc. I bought some "unusual date gold" (what I call "gold coin no man's land") until I realized that no one cared. Even in the environment of a rising gold… -
Re: Book recommendations on classic gold?
One book will not cover everything, but here a few suggested books: The United States $3 Gold Pieces by Bowers with Winter New, excellent book about mid-late nineteenth century gold coins with focus (obviously) on $3's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint (1838-1861) by Winter Great book to learn about the coins from the… -
Re: Atlanta Thrashers moving to Winnipeg?
You know Charlotte was always a good hockey city. I remember back in the early to mid 70's going to see the Checkers play. They had a good following. There was a great rivalry between the Greensboro Generals and the Checkers. It made for some very good hockey. When the NHL expanded some years back someone in the NHL said… -
Re: David Lawrence Rare Coins is One of THEE Best Dealers.
A good dealer thread--how novel! I'll bite. My top three would include: 1. Doug Winter/Pinnacle: DW got me started in rare gold coin collecting. His raregoldcoins.com was the benchmark for an educational/retail coin website. I am sorry that he is not able to keep it up, but he continues to write excellent articles for the… -
1808 Engraved Aboliton of Slavery Coin Story...
This is my favourite numismatic story, as recalled by my uncle, a keen numismatics expert. He loves telling it. It is a wonderful story and very important in US history. On January 1st 1808 the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves came into force. After there was a massive public movement and support for the total…
