Re: Have grading standards become more relaxed for Morgan dollars as opposed to Peace dollar?
I don’t think the standards are any different. It’s the nature of the respective designs… the eye simply “sees” the flaws on a Peace dollar more readily than on a Morgan dollar. As well, luster and (attractive) toning - overall eye appeal - clearly contribute to the coin’s eventual grade. A final thought… I’ve seen many… -
Re: 2010 ASE Proofs... Minted to demand !!

<< <i>It really doesn't matter. $45.00 bucks a peice in the future is going to seem dirt cheap. >> Not to be a party pooper, but into the future could be a decade or more!!! Once graded and shipped both ways, only adds to the wait for a profit window. First Strike @ $18 is not much of a factor on this issue IMHO. I have… -
Re: Just received from teletrade 1899-O Morgan(larger images/adjusted white balance).....opinions please
Brian, the coin has lots of eye appeal, and for a New Orleans coin, the strike is better than most I've seen. I also like the die crack and the coin's clean surfaces. Question - how serious is what appear to be milk spots to the viewer's lt. of the mintmark, and the apparent discoloration on Miss Liberty's face in back of… -
Re: Raw Coins & The Brooklyn Bridge
matteproof, You're absolutely right about the lighting at shows. Some dealers are now even using GE Reveal bulbs in the desk lamps clamped to the table. Nothing hides hairlines and haze better than a Reveal. I bought a little Durabeam flashlight that produces a very harsh and very bright light. Even through the glassine of… -
Who wants a free PCGS PR69 DCAM Ike?

The coin is a 1972-S silver Ike, PCGS certified PR69 DCAM, with stunning Deep Cameo contrast as the grade implies. It has a few near-microscopic milk spots on the obverse which are no bigger than a pinhead, but it would be a nice addition to a modern coin Registry set and in fact was a part of my old 1900-present set at… -
Re: Legend Coin Market Report – Mid-September Report....***UPDATED: Mid-September Report 2***
I spoke with a dealer who went to two in state shows last weekend, he did not do much in business. The only bright spot seemed to be a NY teacher who has been buying collections and has fresh material. But his only buyers are wholesale dealers, he is a newbie to selling it gives him a chance to feel like a big shot, but he… -

Re: How to best naturally tone coins?
What actually causes toning? Is it the sun hitting the coin day after day sitting on a windowsill? Is it environmental- moisture & humidity exposure? Reaction to other elements- magnetic/ metallic/ sulphuric? A cardboard holder? An old paper folder? Temperature changes? It all comes down to storage...how do you keep your…
