Milk Spot Mystery Solved
Here is my solution to the Milk Spot Mystery: 1. For silver coins, the mint uses a chemical wash, which is probably similar to Acetone. The chemical wash evaporates from the coins. As the chemical evaporates, the coin's temperature is lowered. If the temperature of the coin is lowered below the dew point of the surrounding… -
Re: can you remove milk spots on proof coins

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but it seems some people are suggesting acetone will remove the milk spots from ASEs, when in fact I believe it does not, it just protects them pre-spotting. I spent all night with several glass jars and a milk spotted eagle, with chemicals I think it would be illegal for me to leave my… -
Acetone vs Milk Spots and PVC, Pic's Included

As mentioned in a posting a couple of days ago I purchased a few silver dollars recently, the same group I found the 1928 Peace dollar. In the group were 10 American Eagles, three of which had industrial strength “milk” spotting. Oddly enough, all the examples of milk spotting were on the 2003 American Eagles, none of the… -

Re: Sad 20th anniversary SAE milk spot story, need some input.

I heard somebody at the US Milk was drinking Milk on the job and might of sneezed on a huge pile on reverse proofs. That could be the answer right there. Also this same employee has been employed at the same place since 1986 and continues to place the bullion silver dollars in the boxes for delivery. The Us Milk has stated… -
Re: milk spots on silver eagles

<< <i> << <i>I,m no expert , but I think spots are just part of the toning process of silver. Here is a picture of a Silver Kennedy Half roll. with some nice milk spots. >> No, milk spots are NOT part of the toning process. The toning process may expose milk spots that having come all the way out, though. >> "nice milk… -
Rick Kay's research and Milk spots
After reading the thread by Rick and his fascinating research, << <i>As many of you know, I am researching all facets of the 1854 & 1855 LFEs. One importantt portion of this research is testing for metallic content via Scanning Electron Microscope Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX). This is non-invasive testing in which… -

Milk Spots on the Silver Eagles :(
I've been inventorying ASEs I've bought over the years, including MS and Proof 70s. Not surprisingly, a percentage have developed milk spots over time. Based on past discussions, I'm assuming: * There's still no remedy, once they appear; * PCGS stopped guaranteeing grading for milk-spotted ASEs long ago; * My milk-spotted… -
Re: Silver Eagle Milk Spots.............where are they coming from?

<< <i> << <i>Do these milk spots show up right away? Or could each silver eagle (proofs included) be a mini-bomb just waiting to happen? Don't know if I would want to collect silver eagles knowing that any day an ugly surprise may be awaiting me. >> Mini-bomb gets my vote. Over 40% of my 1986-2006 MS69 slabbed SAE set…
