Re: What Qualities Make a Good Coin Dealer?
> This is something that really falls on PCGS to rectify. To become an authorized dealers, you have to go through a 3 month process and background check and sign a bunch of agreements and not everyone even is approved. The discount on grading fees is marginal, and most of us spend no less than $1000/month on grading fees,… -
Re: Why no hammered copper coins? Just silver and gold?
Bronze coinage mostly fell out of use in Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (though there were some issues in the Italian states, as well as the early modern Spanish Maravedis previously mentioned). On continental Europe, the silver coinage was frequently debased, so small base silver coins were a… -
Re: 1937 D 3 leg buffalo and the illogical price to population ratio
Let me speak from the perspective of another so-called "overhyped" coin: the 1895 Morgan dollar in proof. According to PCGS, there are around 629 certified examples of the 1895 proof dollar. Compare that to the 1896 proof, which has only 361 certified examples—yet the 1895 is worth many multiples more, sometimes even 10… -
Re: Steer clear of Patrick J. White of Austin Coins, Inc. of Melville, NY
The amount of elderly people that fall victim to these type of scams is heart breaking, for every one we read about, I imagine a dozen more that aren't identified until post-mortem asset valuations. Im currently assisting with a case of deceptive trade practices against a similar boiler-room outfit who preys on the… -
Re: The Abraham Lincoln Token Thread…..Lets see it all!
There are more than 15 Lincoln Civil War token obverses and many more varieties with die combinations and metal variations than I want to collect. The 1860 Civil War pieces fall into the so-called "Wealth of the South" Series which is endless and full huge rarities. Here are a couple of them. The Lincoln with the… -
Re: Identifying Genuine Missing Copper Layer Cents
That’s awesome — sounds like you really got into that lab! From a chemistry student’s perspective, what you did with the zinc and hydrochloric acid solution was a perfect demonstration of electrochemical reduction. The zinc ions in solution were reduced at the surface of the copper-coated cent, forming a thin metallic zinc… -
Re: Three Day GTG Experiment - Coin Three Ends Late, 7-29, REVEALED 67CAM
That has always been the case with many or most or all Guess The Grades, which is often why I can't venture a reasonable guess. With this situation having good photos and starting with 3 existing opinions in agreement (the TPG; CAC and the photographer) and mostly because it is an experiment about GTGs from photos, I am… -

Re: Fake double-struck error coins on eBay
I see a lot of these. The wavy fields, indistinct design, and and often one-sided double-strikes are some of the main characteristics of these fakes. The host coin is always genuine, and the 2nd strike is the fake part (made from some sort of false die.) They're easy to detect once you know what to look for, but… -
Re: what is wrong with moderns!

<< <i>But if a slab falls on the floor and cracks open, it's not likely the tragedy that would be faced if it was a PR70DCAM ultramodern. >> It depends. If the coin is damaged in the fall, the classic tragedy could be much more serious from a dollar perspective. If the coin is not damaged, PR70DCs have been cracked (by…
