Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: And another "eBay Don't Care" new "Morgan" Morgan fake PCGS...
EBay's AI is metally retarded. In PC terms it's metally challenged. In reality, it's ethically challenged. (View Post)5 -

The concept that the expensive stuff always went up and stayed there was valid until sometime after 2012. I've purchased some heavy hitters at that time, and seen them to lose value and not come back… (View Post)8 -
Re: In Which Decade was Coin Collecting at its Finest?
For me it was the early to mid 1980s, after the big crash of 1980. I was earning a decent salary and was able to buy some good coins. They included the Chain Cent, which is my avatar, a 1796 Quarter … (View Post)3
