Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: Stack’s Bowers to sell the Omega One Cent coins and 24k gold Lincoln cents
Producing only 232 three coin sets is disgusting. These things should be available to all who want to order them. Since one of the pieces is gold, the price would be high enough to keep the poor out … (View Post)1 -
Re: Stack’s Bowers to sell the Omega One Cent coins and 24k gold Lincoln cents
The more the mint gets involved with these “fabricated rarities,” the less respect I have for its policies. We have gone back to the 19th century when the mint was restricking Gobrecht and 1804 Dolla… (View Post)8 -
Re: I turned 64 today, show us your 64s 🌞
The best early half dime I have, graded MS-64. An 1878 half dollar in PR-64. (View Post)12 -
Re: 1959-D Cent - Grading Help
I'd be happey to get the MS-66. At least in the good old days, these coins had to flow on water to make more than MS-66. (View Post)3 -
Re: Mint error 1851 $1- Liberty Gold
More than there used to be for what I have seen. Frankly on a 19th century coin, I don't care about rotated dies. It might be the photo, but that coin looks "flat" with no luster. If so, it… (View Post)2
