Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

No Drapery. With Drapery. This one is a Proof, which makes it a bit rarer. I dream of forming ann 1858 Proof set, but I am very long way from that. (View Post)4 -
Re: Here’s my Bust dollar- post yours
Here is my highest grade piece, although maybe not the best. The overdate on this one is really sharp. There are five varieties of this over date. (View Post)2 -

Here's my type coin, which is graded MS-64, R&B. It has not changed color yet, and I've owned it for 16 years. I have always tried to keep an 1857 around since it was the last of its kind. This o… (View Post)3 -
Re: Here's my Type 1 gold dollar- post yours
I bought this one from a dealer who was planning on cracking it out for a re-grade back when the MS-65 Type I Gold Dollars had much higher bids. I probably over paid for it as a result. It's in an MS… (View Post)1
