Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: What's the worst, money losing, I'm the dumbest person in the world purchase you ever made in coins?

Re: We Want Kennedy - Post your Kennedys!

Re: Anyone going to Baltimore this week? Day 1 Update... Day 2
My Baltimore days are over. My wife is afraid to go to the city because of the crime rate. It's a shame because the city has built a really great convention center, but the thugs have take over. They… (View Post)3 -
Re: Quick CACG Market Thought
I have. One person attacked me for over six months on these boards for refusing to say that CAC didn’t get it right 100% of the time. (View Post)4 -
Re: How do you think present day numismatists stack up vs. those of long ago, in terms of knowledge?
I remember an article in a magazine, from the early 1960s, that showed a black and white outline of a sailing ship, which related “the old wive’s tale” that almost all of the 1804 dollars were lost o… (View Post)2
