Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: How has 2024 treated you so far as a collector?

Re: 1802 Half Dime and Nine 1804 dimes in this little estate auction
The 1802 half dime in Good-4, which interests me, is already up to $71,300 with the buyers’ fee. I have no idea who is running this auction, and the reverse grades Fair. I may as well get that ridicu… (View Post)4 -
Re: Thoughts on Newly Discovered Continental Dollar headed for Auction in England?
Yes, I had a mild interest in these pieces until research disclosed what they are. I was never close to buying one because the quotes from dealers were always close to $200,000. I could not find any … (View Post)2 -
Re: 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal
I have a real one in EF. That’s good enough for me. Pass. Given my luck with the mint’s quality control, they would send me one with adjustment marks. (View Post)13
