Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: Best of the Mint (5) 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set
I have coins with a much higher numismatic premium relative to melt than 1907 High Relief, like a 1792 half disme. I guess I’m crazy. (View Post)1 -
Re: Best of the Mint (5) 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set
Sorry, I thought you were the other guy who is telling me a 1907 High Relief is a dangerous investment compared to the modern, overpriced stuff the mint is selling. I paid $250 for the 2026 silver Pr… (View Post)1 -
Re: Best of the Mint (5) 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set
Paying way over melt for a modern gold coin is financially very risky. I collected the modern gold pieces for years. Could I make money if I sold them? Yes, but only because of their gold content. Th… (View Post)2 -
Re: [GTG]: 1927 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle *GRADE REVEALED*
The piece is very attractive, but it has a very minor break in the mint frost at the highest points. I think that MS-63 is a fair grade, but it's not a "Gem Unc." Here is a 1927 double… (View Post)2 -
Re: It's Labor Day 2026...post the fruits of your labor!
I bought these pieces when I was working for New England Telephone in the 1980s. I bought them raw, there were no TPGs in those days, and had them graded circa 2000. 1796 Dime graded AU-50 1796 Quart… (View Post)8
