Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: $49k Hammer for a 1955 cent! Another incredible auction result for an extremely common coin, no CAC
I paid somewhere in that neighborhood for an 1848 CAL. $2.50 in AU some years ago. Which coin is more interesting? (View Post)18 -
Re: Grading question, is this a PO1 or FR 02?

Re: Informal poll about slabs and aesthetics
I'll take the clear prongs on PCGS holders. Now we can see the edges. The NGC progs can hide problems. I don't like the silid gaskets because you can't see any of the edge. I think that the PCGS slab… (View Post)5 -
Re: Without being cynical, can we dive into the reason for higher buyer premiums?
You are a dealer. You are in the tank for other dealers. I get it. It is useless to debate you. I'm done with this topic. Good bye. (View Post)5
