Welcome to the "Classic Gold Collectors Club!"
The 1838-C half eagle is hardest piece in the set to find nice. I looked at many of them until I found the one that worked for me. The 1838-C was not as well made as the 1838-D, which can be found in AU for a price.
My 1837 half eagle is in a PCGS MS-61 holder, and I am quite happy with it. I traced it back using the Newman Portal site to the 1976 ANA auction, which was held by Stacks' in New York City. There it was graded AU, which is the true true grade. Coin grades are quite fluid, as you probably know.
You might know that we are collecting "Mint Drops." That was name the opponents of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren gave to them on some Hard Times tokens.

Re: The official Philadelphia Eagles 2025 season thread
Barkley is washed up. He and Aaron Rogers can be on the old has beens team next year. If the Jets had not already had Rogers, I’d pick them. The Jets are into has beens, especially at quarterback. (View Post)1 -
Re: The official Philadelphia Eagles 2025 season thread
The Dallas game will be a test even though Dallas is not very good. The Dallas defense is as bad as the Eagle’s offense. The Dallas offense is potent and could blow Eagle’s out if the bird’s defense … (View Post)1 -
Re: U.S. Mint Publishes Early 2026 Product Schedule, Includes Dual-Dated “250” Silver Eagle
Tiresome, the double date thing was done in 1976. The privy mark is quickly becoming trite. (View Post)5 -
Re: Stack’s Bowers to sell the Omega One Cent coins and 24k gold Lincoln cents
The more the mint gets involved with these “fabricated rarities,” the less respect I have for its policies. We have gone back to the 19th century when the mint was restricking Gobrecht and 1804 Dolla… (View Post)9 -
Re: The 2025 regular Proof Set is on sale.
That could happen if the mint keeps raising issue prices. In 1955, the mint issued 378,200 Proof sets. The last reported numbers in the Red Book seem to be headed in that direction. The issue price i… (View Post)1
