2016 30th Anniversary ASE...

BackroadJunkieBackroadJunkie Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭✭✭
From Coin World today:

The Title LXXIII language mandates that the edges of Proof and Uncirculated silver American Eagles with the W Mint mark of the West Point Mint issued in 2016 for the series 30th anniversary have a smooth edge and be inscribed incuse with an anniversary designation. The law does not specify how the edge inscription should read. The edge inscription would not appear on the bullion versions.

So no special set, but a special issue. If you wanted reeded edges next year, it's bullion, I guess...

I never buy these but that does sound interesting/different.

They could have done both lettering and reeding on the coin at the same time like they did on the 1992-D Olympic Baseball Silver Dollars (aka Nolan Ryan Dollars).

Look forward to following this one. The 25th anniv seems like it was yesterday. As it says on my favorite coin: Time flies.

It is definitely different. What's the point?

After the 30th anniv. is over, lets retire the Walker and St. Gaudens designs

and have something else. Ideas you say?, how about old pattern designs such

as the "School Girl" or the "Amazonian" for starters? We could use some of the

more popular old and new commemorative designs. I would like to see some

change and new designs. Make them for a half year, year or two years then

go to another design. It's bad enough that our circulating coinage is redundant

    and boring.

I'm not sure if a solution for redundancy is to use previous designs? Granted those designs never seen by a majority of the public, but a majority won't buy coins anyway.

That sounds interesting... may very well get one... will watch for the offer. Cheers, RickO

The Walker and St. Gaudens designs were previous designs 30 years ago. Since some collectors do not

like the current offerings, that is why I suggested the pattern designs. It would be nice to see the "School Girl"

or "Amazonian" designs in an affordable silver and gold offering. What about seeing the "Oregon Trail" or

"Illinois Centennial" as ASE or AGE. These designs or others would replace the current offerings and the

public would eventually buy them. Just something different every year or two would be nice.

All depends on the numbers ....100,000 or less Mintage,, too many Mint products makes it less special

LOL. Depends on your definition of "special"...

In terms of being uncommon, no, I think that bill means every single proof and unc will have the smooth edige and inscription. That means about a million proofs and maybe quarter to half-million uncircs.

I was using "special" as different from the norm. As in different from the previous 28 regular issues. (As a caveat, I haven't read the bill, so I don't know if the mint can produce reeded edge products.)

I did say "No special set", but upon further reflection, that might not be true. The mint could very well package a uncirc and proof 30th set. (I don't think they can include a bullion coin, since they don't sell bullion directly to the public.) I'll be on the lookout for legislation for a RP and enhanced... image

I think you're forgetting the main purpose of an ASE (and AGE) is a bullion coin. The proof and uncirc versions just come along for the ride. If the bullion didn't exist, neither would the collector versions. It's probably in the mint's best interest to keep their bullion instantly recognizable, rather than having a dozen different versions out there.

And it is a real coin, albeit NCLT, but it would still require an act of congress to change it. (I believe there is also a law that requires a certain time span to pass before the design can be changed again. Of course congress has been known to ignore those laws by just passing another law that says it's okay...)

Regarding the change of designs, many other bullion issuing countries change their

deigns each year, the Chinese do and they don't have trouble selling their product.

Sometimes change is, good sometimes not. Oh well.

    Really like edge inscriptions.

    But it's only for 2016?

    30th anniversary special issue.

And the 100th anniversary for the Walking Liberty design. (Or was that last year?)

It's 2016. But the mint is commemorating that with some 24k gold... And that'll be another thread once the Mint starts to release more info on 'em. image

Yes! Another nice issue from the Mint that, even though I buy a lot of the regular products from them directly via the subscription service, I won't be able to get one of these as I have a regular job with limited computer access so will have to buy one on the secondary market at a huge markup! Can't wait!! Seriously, I do look forward to acquiring one and it seems like the 25th anniversary was just a year or so ago.

I would agree about re-"retirement" of these designs and bringing in some of the patterns from "yester-century".
