**New Discovery** 1950 PF Quarter with hand engraved Tail Feathers

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭✭✭
Found this while preparing a shipment to PCGS. After finding this, I pulled out five other 1950 Proof Quarters that I had for comparison and none of the others exhibited these markings. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has one.

No further comment on this issue?? Seems like there should be more and even some technical discussion. Cheers, RickO

Looks like it also has reengraved wing feathers too. So do my 1952 and 1953 proofs with reengraved tail feathers.

    I thought so too.

I wonder what it would take to have our host slab it with the re-engraved tail feathers noted on the insert?

Back when I was at ANACS I noticed various hand engravings on Proof quarters, and never thought to document them.

Get it into the CPG. It's just that simple.

    Err .. difficult.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I think you should submit to one of those coneca guys and get your name on discovery. I have noticed WING feathers on different years and still trying to figure what years those appear on. I did see a anacs slab on ebay that was in a holder that said 1953 proof with engraved WING feathers, I looked at it to check for the ETF and did not see that. So I think anacs may have already slabbed a 53 and maybe there the ones who would do your 1950. I will try and get to my sdb and check out my 1950 and have heard to watch out for these in other earlier years. It would be nice to see how many different reverse dies they used each of those years as we now know even the superbird had more than 5. Is there not any quarter specialists? Are there any books even written about proof quarters? The name jose cortez does anyone know if this person is still around? As I understoof it him and a few others were into these. Nice find Enjoy image

If you want quarter varieties in this period, consider this:

    1951-1952 had two obverses each.
There are serveral 1952 reverse Washington quarter dies that are class III doubling from
    varieties A and B and also a similiar 1952 D.
