It is with deep regret that I mention the passing of Herbert P Hicks better known here as ProofArtWorkonCircs.

Obituary

He was definitely a legend for his knowledge and experience as well as a keen eye and a way with words. He was a true friend to many and I'd like to believe I was one.

My condolences to his family on their tragic losses.

This is Very Sad News to Me. I have 3 pages of pm's from Herb starting back in 2010.

Last talked in April and he was the one that taught me about the 1969 thru 1972 Type H Quarters and I learned so many other things from him and yet never got to meet him.

My condolences to His Family and Friends. These Boards have lost another person with a Wealth of Knowledge. He shared all the info with anyone that was willing to Learn.

    RIP Herb ................image

I'm very sad to read this.
Herb and I had been chatting for a few weeks now.
He was going to send me his type H rev quarter so I could photograph macro shots and post to the boards the PUPs.

He hadn't written for a week and then wrote me that his wife was in the ICU, but he's getting a couple other coins for me to shoot closeups of.
I told him, my God Herb, do not send me anything till things settle down for the better over there. Life first, coins second. That's the last I heard. That was 5 days ago.

His wife died 2 days before him.

Seemed like a very nice man.

Remains to be seen if the coins were mailed. But if they were, Herb would want them posted to pass on the knowledge.

RIP...never met but condolences to all his friends and of course family.

I would hope not to last long if my wife left early.

    Two days sounds about right.

    That is truly sad news.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Thank you for letting us know and for the link to his obituary.

He PM'd me out of the blue.

He'd been looking at some of my Registry Washingtons and had had some comments and advice he wanted to share with me.

    I was an admirer instantly.

To lose his wife after 60 years of marriage must have been devasting.

For him to pass 2 days after his wife is amazing.

I'd like to believe that they are now reunited.

His wife's passing, undoubtedly, hastened his death.

To be in love with someone for sixty years and then to lose her had to be extremely devastating.

It is an awful thing to go through, when you are young, much less older....I know.

He probably died of a broken heart---the stress killed him.

He likely couldn't live without her, anyway.

Brings a tear to my eye....

God Bless him and her----they are together in paradise (my belief, too).

My prayers will be said for both of them tonight.

This is a huge loss for the Hicks Family and to the Numismatic Community.

I first encountered Herb's writings in the Appendices of the Autoritative Reference for Eisenhower Dollars and was simply blown away when I found out he was forum member ProofArtonCircs! I made the mistake of "assuming" that his primary interest was in Eisenhower Dollars! I found out later that he was quite versed in Washington Quarters and pretty much anything else I could think of or had an interest in.

We communicated quite a bit but I never had the chance to meet him personally. He will be missed as a variety expert, numismatic historian and friend.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

His grandson was asking about him on the coin "subreddit" of reddit. Here is a link if anyone wants to message him or share a story on his post. I sent him a private message.

I have no intention of being disrespectful to the deceased, but, am curious how his wife and his mother had the same maiden name.

I hope they aren't too quick to sell the collection. I'm sure it has substantial value and might just end up in circulation if they take it to a coin shop. In addition to clad he collected many other coins in his lifetime though I don't know if he still has these collections or not.

I am sad to hear this. I first corresponded with Herb when he contacted me about a B reverse Washington I had listed on eBay. I was new to these coins and he acted like I was an expert. After a bit of correspondence with him, I figured out that he wrote the section in a book about the B reverse quarters. I believe he was the first or nearly the first to write about these many years ago. He was a wealth of knowledge - especially about proof art work on circulation strike coins - hence his handle here - ProofArtworkonCircs. He shared his knowledge freely and spent countless hours on his own research. We lost a good man and a ton of information. However we have much of his insight and wisdom preserved here in various threads. Thank you Herb. You will be missed. RIP.

Agreed. I know not everyone shares in our hobby, but for the grandson to be surprised he was a famous collector is kind of sad to me. Hopefully they have a good, honest contact/dealer that can help them go through the remnants of the collection.
