Evidently I missed this post earlier because, it being Passover, I was out finding Christian babies to slaughter so I could use their blood to make matzoh.
Bafferjan, let me school you.
1) "Jew"; capitalization is required. To do otherwise could be interpreted as a sign of disrespect to my tribe.
2) Among ourselves we prefer to call each other "kikes".
3) Very occasionally, as a sign of affection and high regard, we may sometimes let our truest feelings show and address each other as "Christ-killer". This is, of course, only done in secret because the Pope wrongly forgave us. After 2000 years of manipulation, as hinted at in "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion", we don't want to blow it by having him to revoke our (now) free ride.
4) I award you the very infrequently granted permission, when among your like-minded friends, to address each other as "schmuck". If you have problems with this transliteration then "putz" (soft, not hard "u") is an acceptable alternative. If you want to get this exactly right, practice in front of a mirror.
5) As some sober people here might inform you, an apology is not an amends. Recovering from a recto-cranial infarction takes a lot of time and a lot of work. Our hopes and prayers, admittedly to the "wrong" God, are with you.
Rick
Oh yeah.. If you ever need an accountant or a lawyer, PM me. I can fix you up with someone very clever. You will get better service if you can show your birth certificate. And we are always here to help you achieve your collecting goals, be they coins or WWII German militaria.

All that other insensitive and/or offensive stuff people post here on occasion doesn't seem to bother people nearly as much. Why is that?

I'm pretty sure people usually/often get called out when they post other insensitive stuff too. I've seen you (correctly) call some folks out about similar mistakes too. If we miss one, feel free to jump in.
Perhaps this was all just a brilliant plot to get ColonelJessup to post again.
Isn't anyone else also offended by the term "Black Market"? And as someone who is going gray at the temples and in the beard, "Gray market" bothers me a little, too

Got rid of grey in the beard, finally shaved last Saturday for the first time this year.
I think a sincere apology was made. But to go back to earlier in the thread, really? 32 d and s quarters can't be bought cheaply enough? Gee whiz, I have a couple but didn't realize they were worth basically melt. Guess ill blow em out on the ol bst. Sorry my collection is loaded for bear with xf 1851-o quarters and the like, but I'm doing my best!
Huh. And when I hear about a black market for coins, I think of stuff like 1964 Peace dollars, 1974 aluminum cents, and 1933 Double Eagles. I beleive these items DO exist and are bought and sold off the radar.
If Dealer A is regularly spending $100k for 250 coins with Dealer B and he walks up to the table of Dealer B to do business wouldn't you expect that Dealer A is going to get a better price on a 09-S VDB in 64 than Retail Customer A who walks up looking for 1 or 2 coins?
This is wholesale or economy of scale. This is how business is done everywhere. The ability to move larger numbers results in lower pricing.
Without it, markets either quickly plateau or die.

I conclude the only way for this business to really work is to have a healthy and vigorous black market recharging the bottom of the price scale. How else can dealer B have a constant supply of classic coins to dish off to dealer B at "wholesale" ? Why don't coins get sold to retail customers and the hobby ends there? It's not like there is a widget factory making more> So, the "new supply" must come from somewhere ?

Tight supply equates to higher prices for everyone. As prices rise, some owners will "take profit" and sell. As this occurs the market begins to loosen and prices level or drop. At no time does this situation change the economy of scale within the wider market in any meaningful way.
There is no need for a "black market" in any sense of the phrase.
<< <i>Huh. And when I hear about a black market for coins, I think of stuff like 1964 Peace dollars, 1974 aluminum cents, and 1933 Double Eagles. I beleive these items DO exist and are bought and sold off the radar. >>
Would you equate "black market" with underground? I understand there exists an "underground" internet.
I would imagine there aren't many legitimate folks who could legally and discreetly move the large amounts of cash that it would take to buy even those coins.
<< <i>I conclude the only way for this business to really work is to have a healthy and vigorous black market recharging the bottom of the price scale. How else can dealer B have a constant supply of classic coins to dish off to dealer B at "wholesale" ? >>
Because Dealer B gets offered coins that Dealer A doesn't, but would buy if he did. And Dealer B knows this, so he buys them and resells them to Dealer A.
<< <i>Why don't coins get sold to retail customers and the hobby ends there? >>
People change their collecting interests and sell off collections to finance new purchases. Or they quit collecting entirely. Or they pass away. Lots of reasons for coins to continually enter the market.
<< <i>It's not like there is a widget factory making more> So, the "new supply" must come from somewhere ? >>
I had a friend who was a dealer in the late 80's-early 90's (he's now deceased) who traveled to shows with $500k in hundreds. I am reasonably sure he would deal with whatever color market people wanted.
I think I have a valid point to make. The 1 thing people are not thinking about is dealers create holding power. If it were not for the network of dealers across the country who regularly buy coins...all but the rarest would take a dump as far as value. Without dealers...and major auctions(In the same bracket as dealers in this case).....all would sell on ebay or on the street....prices would tumble!
I can't believe I had to read over a page of nonsense over a forum member using the term "jew" - walk around shows and you'll hear the term very often. Get over it.
<< <i>I can't believe I had to read over a page of nonsence over a forum member using the term "jew" - walk around shows and you'll hear the term often. Get over it. >>
Thanks, but I will never get over "it!" And "it" is precisely why we must remain vigilant.....not just for our Jewish friends....but for all of us. It is a reminder that even when we think things are getting better (and they are) we should realize that we are not so far removed from hatred and discrimination and inequality and the risk that it can raise its ugly head again..and relatively quickly at that. So that type of comment has no place on a public forum because it is derogatory and that is the nicest way I can say it.
That it is said is one thing but that one lets it pass is another.
And this is not directed at Bajjerfan whose comment is likely innocent, or more accurately ignorant of the connotation it carries.
It is a reminder that even when we think things are getting better (and they are)...
It's easy to make that mistake when you live in the USA. In other parts of the world, things have in recent years been perhaps worse than at any other time in history. All the more reason to remain vigilant.
