ebay/paypal scam - beware

derrybderryb Posts: 38,555 ✭✭✭✭✭
Made a large gold purchase on ebay, paid with credit card via paypal. Day later get an ebay message from seller "I entered the wrong tracking number into paypal and ebay, will send you correct tracking later." Viewed UPS tracking info that he posted. A delivery to my city (last month) from Nashville, my seller is in Maine. Appears seller was going to use the "delivered" info to get the funds out of his paypal account. Called paypal, $6200 immediately returned to me. No hassle, no wait - instant refund.

Scammer must have had easy access to delivery information with UPS to get one for my city. Inside job?

took three calls to paypal before I found someone who saw the scam. The first two were "don't worry about it, you've got paypal protection if you don't get your purchase." Paypal protection has always worked in my favor - after weeks of having money tied up.

    Inside job...you bet ya.
I printed a Priority label at USPS.com and paid with Paypal
The next day I got a receipt stating I printed 3 labels and paid with CC.
I was intended to attempt to correct that 1 was printed instead of 3.
Now only the USPS and Paypal had that info...
    Inside...ya think???

Do you think this could have had any connection to the massive theft of CC info that was reported in the media this week?

Good thing you figured that out. A lot of people would have accepted his story and waited for another tracking number while he got the funds. I think you did paypal a favor, if you didn't figure it out maybe your money would be tied up a while and in the end paypal would be covering the loss at their expense.

99% of my ebay purchases come via USPS. delivery by ups or fedex on ebay is almost a red flag for me.

that was sharp to pick up something was wrong with his email. always good to hear a + outcome to these situations.

Do you think it was a hijacked account or a "smart" seller?

Paypal owes you. You followed the rules so you would have been covered by paypal buyer protection so if the scammer had been successful, the victim would have been paypal. That is why paypal fees are as high as they are. The more wise buyers like you help paypal avoid being taken, the lower fees will stay. --Jerry

Pay Pal has a top notch team willing to snuff out fraud at every level. I do widgets and the scammers have tried a few times with me. Pay Pal has a lot of good things going for it. I know eBay has at least one good thing going for them.
My monthly fees are nearly equivalent to my mortgage payment.
