Ouch, I held onto the semi-key date modern too long...

2004 Proof Platinum $50 for under $1000.

I remember a few going for north of $2500 back in 2005! image

    I purchased a 2004 Platinum PCGS Proof 70 $50 for $5500, when the price guide said $8500.
I purchased a Cheerios Sacagwea for $4,000 , spent a couple years bustin' PCGS' orbs to grade it, and like an idiot turned down offers of $17K, and $25K respectively. And I mean VERY RESPECTIVELY. image

What is holding "too long' ? I'm not sure if this makes me a masochismatist or a numisadist. , but I don't like the pain of thinking about it.

Just another example of someone going to all the work and effort of selling a coin on a venue for less money net than the seller could sell the coin to a dealer specializing in the field with no work or effort whatsoever.

That said ... prices on proof platinum have generally fallen over the past few years, but let's not forget that platinum spot is still about $600/oz lower than where it was selling a few years back.

  • About a year ago the price of platinum was significantly above that of gold, now it seems that the tables have turned. Yet when I go to buy a piece of platinum at the local coin emporium the purchase price of platinum (including premium) is slightly above gold and its premium.

This does seem strange. I'm just looking for a comeback even though I still buy gold but platinum is good too when the price is right. imo.

I always find out about this kind of deal way after the fact. The price paid was significantly under market. Somebody made a killing while others were sleeping.

I actually bought this from the mint but from what I recall it was around $700 then. I'm not underwater, it's just that watching it slide from $2500 to $1500 to $1000 kind of hurts. Wondercoin brought up some good points, though, and I still have it, so I haven't lost money on it yet. image

My only concern holding it longer term is that mintages of 5K is no longer impressive, especially with even proof gold spouses having mintages of under 4k.

I guess the bottom line is : If you like it, the cost doesn't matter.
