Post a Gruber with Peak reverse to help me recoup.

Well, I was relocated to Colorado Springs a month ago. Being a beautiful day, I thought I would hike my old butt to the peak. It is a 12 mile hike going from 6500 feet altitude to 14,100 feet. I made it to the base camp, enjoyed the all you can eat spaghetti dinner, let my dinner settle, and realized that down was the only winning alternative. I now realize that I need a couple of more weeks to let my old butt adjust to the altitude. Next time I will make it to the top. I hope!

Have a Great Day!

so technically it is a 24 mile hike, round trip! and you can probably double that amount for the elevation factor. so a 48 mile hike.

doesn't sound like a hike at all ;-)

know anyone else yet that has made the trek on foot?
    .
    edited to add.
based on 6500 and 14100 it sound like less than 2 miles straight up or maybe a little over 2 at an 40-60 degree angle. probably aren't different paths to take up huh?

going straight up would be a killer but so can taking too long to get to the top, ie 12 miles.

probably need to calculate the distance vs time traveled for your trips to find out what kind of time and energy expectations to plan for.

something like that 12/24/48 mile journey sounds to me like it would be worth planning for

maybe even walk a bike up so in case you are near death upon completion you can just ride down ;-)

The temperature variation is also a stumbling block. On average the temperature drops about 40 degrees from start to finish. Hey, a challenge that I think that I can overcome in a couple of weeks. Right now my calves are burning. It sucks to get old.image

Been there and done that. Started at 3am and finished at the top at 6pm. Nice jaunt.

That was about 30 years ago when I was in my mid 30's. Wife and both kids did it with
me and the kids reached the top long before old Dad.

Then it was on to Grays and Torry (sp?) up off of I-70. Son got altitude sick on that one
and we only made it to the top of Grays Peak. Torry was soooo close and we just could
not carry on and had to get down to lower elevation asap.

It was all good but never attempted another Fourteener!

Hope you get it done and then get all the other ones too! What is there, 54?

Great peak to hike. Did it once a couple years ago...when I was in better shape...still it was tough!

When the old man makes it to the top of the mountain , there will be pics of the journey. I won't provide them, the son-in-law will. I am too old to waste my time learning how to do that crap. I spend my time living.

Give yourself at least three months to acclimate to the altitude. Six will be better. When I lived in C-Springs I used to play cards with a guy who trained people for the El Paso County Search & Rescue Squad. He used to tell us all sorts of stories about the flatlanders they had to carry down off the Peak.

BTW, the City of Colorado Springs maintains a rotating webcam atop the peak, at:

The image is supposed to update every 30 seconds, but if it seems to be sticking in one spot just hit your refresh button.
