  For a short period of time around 2001 NGC employed the descriptors of T and W for coins that they deemed Toned (T) or White (W). The program was not popular and they stopped using the letters.

  That was one of the problems with the NGC program; I noticed a fair number of coins that were completely white and had a T on them while others were lightly toned and had a W on them.
