Question about PR70 grade.

Awhile back I purchased a gold panda slabbed as pcgs PR70. When I recieved it i found a small nick on the obverse rim. It was rather distracting so i sent it back and they sent me another one. The new one was flawless. What are the grading standards for PR70? I always thought if I bought a 70 it was supposed to be perfect. Sometimes Ill be looking at PR70 buffalos for sale on ebay and occationally youll see one with a mark on the rim... What gives?

could be monday morning grading or friday before closing too

toss in someone sends in 1,000 gold buff's to grade....missing even 5 or 10 out of a 1,000 is high percent of accurate grading

NGC graeds PF70 and PCGS grades PR70

was it in an NGC or PCGS holder?

now i do wonder how graders handle those mass/bulk of same coin for grading

then could it be a striking issue, or is it definitely a mark on the rim?

Hard to tell it was shiny when it was supposed to be matte and a slight indentation it definately didnt belong there and i would have thought it would have knocked it down to a 69.

The criteria used by PCGS is a 70 graded coin should have no imperfections visible under 5X magnification.

Well if it is similar to the imperfection on the reverse, inside rim of this proof buffalo then they probably graded it "as struck." That is an imperfection not caused by contact. Perhaps the gold didn't fill in well there?

or something in the rim part getting struck through.

sometimes you see something like that on a coin... then you see it on a few other coins in the same spot.

t's hard to say exactly what caused it, but from the shininess and shape, it does not appear to be a contact mark, but the coin was struck that way instead.

Occasionally you will find PR70's that should be 69's and 69's that should be 70. The difference is so small that it isn't surprising graders sometimes mess up.

Actully does 70 mean perfect or does it mean perfectly as minted? There is a diference.

I have a 69 UHR that is perfect except for some tiny scuff that appears to be from the edge lettering process. I would call it "as minted". PCGS bumped it a grade.

There is suggestive evidence which supports a disproportional amount of problems with buyers with less than 50 FB. Although not causal, there is a strong correlation.

Numbers do not lie. Sorry.
