Santa Clara show coming back???

I heard from a collector friend who heard from a prominent dealer that they think the Santa Clara, CA coin show is coming back and will be held some time in August so not to conflict with other key coin shows in the U.S.. Is there any validity to this or is it just wishful thinking?image

if they are interested in success, they will NOT do what the former promoter did and perhaps try some of the ideas that have been bandied around here in other threads.

    I hope it's successful.

John McIntosh is promoting it and it will be a much smaller show, not a national show.

Good, I've always enjoyed talking with him and his son at shows. I'm hoping this has great success.

Apparently the same promoters as the SF mint show. Apparently not too good in the way of national dealers.....

That is a different show at a hotel in the area.

Scott Griffin is doing a show at the Convention Center, smaller in size but the facilely was not fully used before anyways. Scott's is in Aug, the McIntosh show is much earlier I think April but don't remember for sure.

  • McIntosh is having a show in Sunnyvale in Mid March at the Dominion Hotel. It is NOT meant to be an official Santa Clara Show. Griffin is having a show in the Santa Clara Convention Center later this year. The major problem with a show like this is the lack of grading services or auctions. If that is the case, no national or even regional dealers will attend, just local and CA dealers. This is a good opportunity to revive the old coin and collectibles philosophy of Rudy Christians. Invite some local NBA or NFL stars for autograph signings with good promotion, and you will have lines of collectors out the door.

    Wasn't the former promoter CU?

I'm very glad to hear it has been ressurected.

No, the former promoter (I can't recall the name) wasn't CU. All they did was increase the cost to the collector at the door, raised the cost to the dealer for table space, reduced the breadth of collector interest and put the show out of business. Probably not an MBA candidate.

Sounds a lot like the people running the Long Beach show into the ground.

It was expos unlimited, owned by CU.

  • Just a frame of reference.

Santa Clara show, started by Rudy Christians, Expos Unlimited. This show was a replacement to the Marin Show which was held in San Raphael, CA in the 1980's
Rudy Christians sold the show to Ron Gillio.
Ron Gillio sold the show to Collectors Universe.

I talked to Scott Griffin today at a local coin show today. They hope to have

the same room at the Santa Clara Convention Center, but only half the floor
space. (The rest of the floor space will be walled off, and may be used for
another convention center event, but as of right now there is no other event
    booked.)

    Is there a dealer list?

I don't know if Scott puts out a dealer list for the August show, but I'm going to give it a shot and see how it does. They cut the convention center room in half down the middle (the show will be in the right half of the same room that the PCGS show was in). I really hope it does well and that lots of public attend. I will do my best to get the word out!
