Requesting the wisdom of the ancients
Hello all,
I’d like to humbly request the advice from seasoned veterans/dealers in the Coin World. Here is my situation: I collected on and off as a child, got back into numismatics a couple of years ago (lightly), and now have been full force for the last 6 months. I am currently 28, am a full-time college student, and run the ebay department for a busy pawnshop. I was so thrilled to actually get a job that involves my hobby, and am learning quite a bit through handling raw coins. I wouldn’t call myself a dealer because they are not my coins, and I do not have the volume to sell at shows.
Basically am looking for any advice in any aspect of working in the field of numismatics. As a lurker on CU, I see the sheer number of posts, and the quality of coinage that many members have experience with. I have also been made aware via a PM on another coin forum, of the wealth of experience on this site.
The reason why I started this thread was to hear the advice from others that have been there and done that. I have been told by in the past to “not speak my mind so much.” “Respect the ones with more experience,” and “Stances like this could hurt you in the future.” This advice is starting to sink in. Once again any words of wisdom would be appreciated. I want to do this right.

This site has alot to offer.
So run an ebay operation for a successful coin dealership.
Also be proactive to seek employment with big companies like Heritage
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

<< <i>You have chosen wisely, young Skywalker. The Force is strong here. This place will make a Jedi of you yet, just give it time and use the Force. It is already within you, I can tell. >>
You're mixing Indiana Jones quotes with Star Wars quotes.
I thought for sure someone was going to go the Yoda route.
Coins lead to slabbing
Slabbing leads to registry
Registry leads to bankruptcy.

Whaaat? Show me the Indiana Jones in that. Just 'cause I'm wearin' a hat, you must've gotten confused.
I've got all the autographed scripts right here. I'll show you.
(shuffling papers)
Ah, dangit.
They must be in the vault, underneath the double eagle bags.
Aww, too bad, I shall have to mend the error of your ways another time.
Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time. *Pbllllt*
(Had to get a Monty Python Holy Grail quote in, y'know.)
I would say that the advice you mention in your OP should be things that are subjective to the time and place.
A lot of the meaning behind them could be, imho, wrapped up as: "Numismatics is full of large egos.....choose your time/place/words carefully".
There are some very smart folks, and very knowledgeable ones, on these boards and yet, no one is infallible. Glean the info you can and see what makes the most sense for you.
Watch out for the ego driven headbutting. Not worth it (been there, done that, have the book signed to prove it
Go ahead and speak your mind, but, before you do, think how it will be interpretted (remember, things come across differently in a forum with text only than they do in person with the nuances of language that is spoken), and how you are iwth the different ways it may be interpretted.
Stances are more fun.....if your stance is "yeah, coin doctoring is ok to do", then you may want to get your absestos suit on and many here, myself included, will likely disagree with that type of statement.
However, if your stance is "Moderns/bullion are fun to collect", then some will agree and some won't.
I lurked for a couple of months before i first posted (been so long, I think it was a couple of months
There is SO MUCH knowledge given on these boards that it is amazing. I will never know everything about everything/anything, but I have learned a lot from the fine forum folks. I can grade some series very well, and have learned a little on others. I have learned things to look for on toning and cleaning.
Post pictures, take criticism, be prepared for criticism (most is not directed AT a person or meanly, but can be interpretted that way if not careful), and have fun. Learn the forum conventions (don't post items for sale in the USCF and try to keep things US Coin related in the USCF) and have fun fun fun
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
