Registry set ennui.....
I've had a lot over fun over the years, tracking down and submitting coins that I had visions of "being number one", competing in the
arena etc. etc. and enjoying the heck out of it.
As background I was collecting coins from David Hall and remember B.J. Sears well, when they first started marketing world coins back in the 70's.
I still have a few, enclosed in Kointains and inside plastic flips with grades on the holder. I will say they're tougher now though; had a lot of fun sending in one
graded MS 66 for cross over and complaining when it failed to cross.
I really like the folks there; always super helpful, cooperative in trying to list new sets I'm working on and a genuine pleasure to deal with.
I guess my problem, and I do hope it's temporary, is that I've reached the plateau where coins that will improve the sets are both much too elusive and much
too expensive for me to acquire most of the time. I'll spend far too much time and money shopping through all the auction houses, ebay, pms to other collectors, etc.,
buying raw and submitting for the highergrades that are really tough to come by--all of those hurdles that other posters here are well familiar with.
The other consideration is that I generally feel like the "modern" issues I have to specialize in because of cost are pretty much looked down on here.
That's understandable and I don't resent it; just don't seem to have a "connect" with most posters.
It's usually a "that's very nice, now run along" kind of association.
I hope this doesn't sound hostile; not intended to be. There are many really classy posters here who understand the various varieties and are always truly helpful.
So, folks, the problem is mine alone and maybe I'll work myself out of it one of these days and start enjoying the pursuit again.
I'm attaching a link that will illustrate what my main interests are; a set I built for my brother in law because he is a devoted W.B. Yeats fan.
It was tons of fun to put together and package; most of the grades in there are not as easy as others might think and at least my brother in law and I share some
sense of accomplishment in it.
All this said; maybe I'll ask BJ to create a "modern crap that only a doddering old fool would be interested in" category.
Then maybe some of us can relate

Registry Set Ennui-there's a reason for it.
I'll run along now.
Adios.
It doesn't matter what you collect as long as you're passionate about collecting. The set you linked has a very neat idea behind it. As a fan of Yeats I didn't know about his involvement in the design committee for the Irish free state series. In terms of the coins, I am not too familiar with the issues, so can't fully appreciate the set in terms of technical grades, but I do like the designs. Don't let lack of comments on the forum discourage you from enjoying the coins. Please stop by and share whenever you add to the set - don't know about others, but I would like to see how the set is progressing.
Cheers,
Roman.

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about that, I think we all get that at times. The thing is, there are only a few regulars here, and each has his/her own thing going. My collection is so far off the beaten trail that I may be the only one here collecting those themes, so I expect limited interest. Doesn't stop me from posting though.
You have some great stuff on that link, but 525 images may take some time to go through. Looks great from what I've seen so far!
Just looked at the yeats... its really very nice, now just run along!
I hope you and everyone collects for their own passionate reasons etc.
Otherwise you likely doomed on the boards.
Keep it up!
Sorry to get all pouty about it but I guess it's part of the boredom syndrome I've been going through
for a couple of months now.
For my part, I haven't been posting on anybody else's threads either so quid pro quo is fair.
I'm trying to crank up some enthusiasm again. Maybe a decent grade or two will help.
Again, thanks for taking a look.....
As to the definition of "modern crap" it's an eye of the beholder kind of thing I think.
To the collector of ancients, 17th century coinage might be "modern crap".
I do know for a fact that anything post 1950 is "modern crap" to most of the posters here; which is why I'm asking for
a special category that they can't even BEGIN to compete in
Another ennui offshoot:
Bill I owe you some coins that I promised to locate and send back around Christmas time.
To be honest I haven't had the heart or the time to even touch those stored away blue boxes for months now.
I WILL get them to you, so please don't give up. They're gratis of course and glad to do it; just, well, you know.
Eric Beckmann, a great guy and one of the foremost Canadian collectors in the market, promised to send me a couple of coins, gratis,
and it took him a year to get around to it. I never lost heart or appreciation and I'm sure you won't either-or at least I hope so.
Best to all....
Best Regards,
George
What a great lookin' set!
Modern Irish (at least the predecimal) does NOT fall under "Modern Crap" so much in my eyes because of the modest mintages.
I love that stuff. I did the whole predecimal run, raw, in the three Dansco albums. Completed 'em, too, but for that one elusive 1943 florin. (I did have the '43 halfcrown.) But my raw set ran the gamut from about VG-F on up to BU. Yours are consistently lovely.
I've often tinkered with the idea of doing 'em again.
It's a shame the Darkside is a sleepier place than you-know-where, but there's more quality than quantity over here, right?
<< <i>The darkside folks tend to be less garrulous than the people over on the other side. >>
Perhaps it's not so much that as there are a bit fewer of us here in comparison to you-know-where and the main Registry Forum. I can only imagine what sort of reception an Irish coin Registry set would get on the main Registry forum. Probably ... nothing.

Oh, and back to the thing on how difficult it is to get attention for one's collections. I recently had to laugh when I posted the beginnings of my new circulated Jefferson nickel set on the Liteside. This is a set done strictly from circulation, with no buying, no swapping, and no gifts, so it's a bunch of coins that will have cost me five cents each- and most of them will be worth little more than that. It's hard to think of a more humble collection. But that thread I posted it in had 27 replies before I'd even searched my first rolls or added the first coin to it!
Quite the contrast to the comparatively modest reaction received by some of my more "serious" longterm collections that involved far more time, work, and financial outlay.
Oh well.

<< <i>....the boards here have some pretty well-educated folks, but some don't know what ennui and quid pro quo mean, so your familiarity with terms in French and Latin separates some wheat from chaff..... >>
I had to chuckle at that one. I am part of the chaff around here; I readily admit I had to google each term. Gold star for not aiming for the lowest common denominator around here (aka - me). Let the education in numismatics and vocabulary continue.......
ennui = a feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction as a result of boredom; a listlessness originating from a lack of interest
quid pro quo = a more-or-less equal exchange or substitution of goods or services
Along with some decent grades,a sure cure for Registry set ennui
Thanks again.....
I love the word "ennui", but you never see it except as an answer in a crossword puzzle. I also feel your pain as it is hard to upgrade my sets.
