LSRC Long Beach Show Report 2/12
I wanted to use my new Coin Inventory software that I had just purchased ...
Glenn and I spent all day Tuesday trying to work out the bugs, but it just didn't happen.
A few more hours,and I can burn my 3 x 5 cards
Got to the show on Wednesday at 2pm ready to rock and roll.
I put all my slabbed coins in 4 cases, and all my "stuff" in 4 more.
Before I had even put everything out,one dealer bought 17 Peace dollars and Walkers.
That was a good way to start.
It was very busy until closing wednesday selling lots of Walkers,Peace and Morgan dollars...and alot of Franklins !
The Franklins were coins I sent to PCGS through their bulk program.. Thanks Miles..
I put some of my 100 plus proof Barbers on display, and had many people beg to have first shot when they are for sale.
I sold 12 BU rolls of Franklins, and many ms63-4 slabs.
Thursday started out busy as well.
Once the public was let in,I was busy all day.
I sold proof sets,US and Canada..Raw quarters,ms61-3 Morgans, Chinese cash coins..over 500 of them, and lots of one of a kind coins that I have picked up in recent deals.
I was so busy,I never got to even think about looking at the Heritage auction lots.
I have been going to the Long Beach show since I was a kid,so I know lots of people in this area.
I sold coins to two people that I have played tennis with over the years, and never knew they collected coins.
2 great new customers.
I sold coins to 2 ham radio operators that I never knew played with coins.
I picked up lots of consignment coins including over 500 NGC old holdered Mercury dimes.
I was having fun just like the good old days.
Friday was steady also, with almost no time to look at other dealer's tables..
I probably walked the floor for 20 minutes total.
Many people brought coins to me,which made it easy to see what was available.
I bought very few out of the tons that I looked at..
If it was nice,I bought it..if it was just stuff, back in the box it went.
Saturday was steady with retail customers.
I bought and sold about a bag of 90%,and also sold a few hundred raw dollars, including many CC coins.
Sold a fair amount of Toned Morgans..this market is heating up again !
Glenn wanted to pack up and leave early Saturday, but customers kept coming to the table.
I sold a nice 92cc in 64 just when I heard the announcement the the public had to leave.
One counterfeit PCGS 1922s peace dollar in ms65 kept coming to my table..
$1300 for a $2000 coin..
There is no free lunch in the coin biz.
I told the owner NOT to sell this coin here at this show, and to return it to where he bought it..
He had a dealer badge, and a table at the show.
As soon as he left my table,he offered it to another dealer who also told him it was fake..
He was told again NOT to sell it here.
Within 30 minutes, that same coin was brought to me by a dealer who just bought it.
I told him the story, and he was quite upset..
He called the seller, and the seller denied ever hearing that the coin was a fake.
In my opinion, that dealer should be kicked out of Long Beach for good.
He knew what he was selling, and didn't care.
On Saturday an older man brought me some better date walkers in 4th world slabs labeled ms63.
He wanted my opinion of the grades.
Before I even took a good look at them,it was obvious that they were AU or worse.
Both were cleaned, and probably worth 100.00 max each.
He said he paid $2400 for one,and $1800 for the other on Ebay.
I told him to call Ebay and report the seller.
I hear this story every show, and tell these novice collectors to choose 1-2 trusted dealers, and buy from them...
Too many people are being stung with Crapola on Ebay.
Packed up and drove the 27 minutes to my home, and crashed..
I love shows when they are busy..
Spent Superbowl Sunday doing paperwork..
Spent today doing more paperwork, and shipping coins that I sold on my website.
I hope others had a good show.
Next for me is the PCGS Invitational in Las Vegas at the end of this month..
Back to my paperwork and returning phone calls

Glad to hear you were busy. I did get a sense this was a busier show than previous Long Beach shows.
Hope you feel better soon.

Had the typical easy to tell signs..
Coin was about a 63 reverse,and a 64 obverse..should have been a 64 at best.

Glad you had a busy show.
<< <i>Thanks for the report. Very interesting about the fake coin, was it in a PCGS holder? >>
Sounds like it... and if that is the case, why not get PCGS involved since they are right down the aisle from you guys at the show???

<< <i>Sounds very busy. 500 fatty slab Mercs!? I bet there are some real cherries in that group. >>
I wonder how many gold beans you'd get if you submitted all of them without looking

He probably bought it in his store, and rather than take the hit, tried to stick someone else with it..
Looked like a loser to me,and others who saw him..

Larry,
Glad to hear you were so busy at the Long Beach show,
I hope the doldrums of the more recent shows have left.

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
New Barber Purchases
I just might have to consider a table at the Long Beach show.
