Since I haven't been following this discussion recently...are milk spots turning up only/mostly on slabbed coins or on both raw and slabbed?

I agree, at $4500 for 5 sets, plus fees of about $958 for slabbing with a First Strike designation, when all is said and done, you are into it at about $1091 per set.

Many ebay sales are more like this one .... 380408412735 with seller after ebay/paypal fees netting well under $4,000. Sometimes closer to $3,850 - $3,900 tops. And, then (hypothetically) what happens when your ebay buyer opens the box and says many of the coins were all out of their holders (damaged) and wants to return them all? Me ... personally ... I would (probably) NEVER sell a sealed box on ebay, but I would not hesitate to buy one as I am "holding all the cards" as the ebay buyer. As always, just my 2 cents.

  • I just sold a sealed box of 5 for that $4500. Buyer purchased several in that range. I'm guessing they are going to get them graded. Still on the slow boat registered train to the buyer but hopeful not to have any issues as you indicate could occur WC. I sure haven't spent the money from paypal at this point image

Yeah, good question. I submitted via a dealer a Bo5 for bulk grading, paid $750 to get 'em first gen Mercanti graded, got back three 69 sets and two 70 sets.

I'm into this for $1500 for the box, $750 to grade, another $100 for shipping = $2350.

Right now, $750 for 69 sets and $1500 for 70 sets is about the best you can do. So that equals $5250 total.

$5250 - $2350 = $2900 after grading. About the same as if I had just sold the Bo5 sealed.

Prices for these sets after grading really need to go up substantially to make grading worthwhile.

I think right now, the added value of grading is consumed by the grading fees and not realized by the submitter.

  • Listings on e-bay for sealed sets(first strike eligible) are drying up.......which might suggest that people are waiting for better prices. The higher the sealed sets go the higher the graded sets should go (in theory) WC and a few others seem to have sold sets in the 16-1800 price range.......maybe because of 2nd gen holders????........I thought the price for sealed sets would be 1000 per by now........maybe wishful thinking or maybe just ahead of the curve by a few weeks ??..........the box that sold for 4500 also had 59.95 shipping and that sold with one bid to a buyer who had 600+ feedback............

Has anyone ever gotten a written explanation from either PP or eBay about why a buyer should have ANY recourse when he is buying what amounts to a "mystery" package? If you sell a mint sealed package of anything with the understanding that the package is as it arrived from the mint distribution facility and that you have no responsibility for "fugitive" coins or errors in contents then how can it possibly be SNAD? As soon as he opens it the buyer has now created a SNAS; significantly not as sold.

I did the exact opposite. I sold my sealed box of 5 on the BST for 3650 and then turned around and bought a 69 set on the BST for $750 and a 70 set from Goldmart for $1265, both included shipping. I ended up with the 2 sets plus $135.

I don't do well with the sealed box thing, I have no patience and constantly want to open them to take a look. I also couldn't bare the thought that one of the two keys could be bouncing around in the box and end up grading a 68.

Sold three single sealed sets at, $995, $900 and $975 over the past 3 months. No problems so far. Shipping last one Registered Mail yesterday with insurance cost me $60 because of the big a** box. OUCH. Highest I saw for a sealed Box of 5 was $4600.

A collector came into the shop with a set. I offered him spot minus the crack-out costs. He called 9-1-1. Then he sat there for a couple hours laughing at the way I deal with people. image

Spotting issues did not effect the 2006 20th Anniversary mania. I have three 25th Anniversary sets slabbed.. One in PCGS 70 and two in NGC 70. That is the limit of the graded sets I will hold long term. My 2006 Reverse Proof First Strike PCGS PR 70 already went once into spot review. PCGS fixed the coin or replaced it, not sure which one it was since they did no tell me. Rest of my 25th Anniversary Sets will be sold sealed.

I had 10 sets of 2006-W Anniversary sets......30 coins......10 had milk spots if I recall correctly.
Sold on eBay June of 2010.

I sold most of my 2006 sets within a year. All were graded. No spotting when I sold. I would not hold the 2006's long term except the two 70 sets (one pcgs and one ngc) in my pernament collection. Something about the grading process may speed up the spotting issue. Don't know. My mom's 2006 Anniversary set which is raw has no spots last I checked a few weeks back.

I had a raw 2006 RP that spotted. Sold it to someone on BST for silver spot price. Wish I had gotten it graded to protect its market value.

By the way, there's strong demand for the 2006 RPs in 70. You're wise to hold them long-term, especially if the Mint decides to make them into a series.

Good question Bully! Why grade? I didn't bother and am happy with the sealed sets I have remaining.

As far as the buyers at this level, them might just be wanting the raw, unprovoked, unmolested, unopened, and undeniably "perfect for me" sets.

Sealed box price is very good but fees will bury you.

Did better on cases graded across the street.

I'd like to see the % of 70's passing thru with "bulk" submission labelling......(Mercanti, Black Label, etc)
  • DCWDCW Posts: 7,610 ✭✭✭✭✭
    I agree, why bother?

Especially with all the silly labels, autographs, flags, etc.

Seems like an incredible waste of money to certify them when the profit over issue price was substantial already.

  • Here is what I think. If you got the sets from the mint then you can't go wrong.
If you have them graded or not you will still profit on these sets.

Now for those who are getting them at $4000 a set, they get them graded
and gets one 70 and four 69 sets then they are still making money.
Or probably those buyers really believe in the future of these sets that they
are willing to spend now and profit later.
  • So where is the downsideimage

  • << <i>So where is the downsideimage >>

Maybe if you don't get a 70 set out of five sets submitted. image
  • or getting a PCGS 68 five coin set... that would be depressing hahahaha

Downside is the cost of grading doesn't get you anywhere in the current retail market if you have a sealed Bo5.

    Grading should add value.

But in this case, it doesn't, graded 69 sets sell for less than sealed sets on ebay.

Glad I spent the money to get 'em graded to find that out! image

Added value is not apparent in the current retail market, except in the longshot 70 category.
  • I considered getting my sets slabbed, but due to the fees and the high variance in the grading results, I chose to sell them to established dealers on the BST instead, except for one box which I traded for some 70 sets and cash with Wondercoin. The extra 5-8% return available from ebay wasn't enough to overcome the risk of a bad transaction IMO. I also hadn't used eBay in several years and found that my old powerseller account had been closed, so I'm sure the low feedback may have reduced my bids.

I considered holding some boxes a little longer to see where pricesed ended up , but found myself spending too much time tracking the prices and the latest information.
