Seated Dime Fans... Check out this 1841-O Small-O, Closed Buds **Updated Pics**

So cell-phone shots are going to have to do until I get to my real camera tomorrow.

This was a cherrypick, unfortunately, not by myself.

The pictures are a little out of focus, like I said, these are cell-pics. But in hand, the coin appears to be a solid VF/VF+.
The obverse is significantly better than the reverse, is this common for the coin?
There is a fair amount of luster remaining on the obverse and reverse, although there is a slight chance the coin was dipped at one time.

So for a coin that there is what, 10-15 known (most low grades), should this be sent in through Secure Plus? Will they still do a details grade if it is a cleaned piece?

Thanks for your advice and good pictures will be following tomorrow!

Fantastic find! And no, Secure Plus isn't a must. It might serve a useful purpose if you're absolutely certain it would grade and place in the top of the condition census, for the value it would carry to dime variety specialists. Did Larry pick this?

  • Nope, this was not a Larry find...
A local person picked it and I am going to submit it for him.
We figured maybe try for secure plus, because with all the service fees and shipping both ways, it'll cost about $130 without secure plus, or $145 with.

I still don't fully understand secure plus. I would say there is about a 50/50 chance that it would come back cleaned.
I hesitated to say from the horrible pictures, but I think it has a shot at XF. The coin really does look sharp in hand. So would a problem free XF40 benefit being in a secure slab?

If I read the pop reports correctly, the highest PCGS is a 35 I believe. And the Fortin Plate Coin was a 50...
  • That is very cool.
  • Crypto,
It is indeed a pretty awesome coin. As everyone always says on eBay, pics don't do this coin justice.
But that is the truth with these pics.
  • Luckily, Gerry Fortin caught this post on the Seated Forum... here is his reply:

Jordan... that is indeed a nice Small O Closed bud. I would grade it EF45 on details but you will need to run the TPG gauntlet for a holdered grade. If you want a details grade, then go with NGC. But for their piece, the grade is rather obvious and it is worth a shot at PCGS even if it ends up in a Genuine holder.

If the coin is intended for resale, then again have it holdered first. Then check my webpage here for an idea of retail pricing; http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/major_100_pricing.htm Please be aware that there are many more than 10-15 Small Closed buds known. The question now is finding a nice original specimen in EF or better.

Below is my example purchased years ago and in the condition census as a comparison. This coin sits in a PCGS Geniune holder code 92.

You can tell by the PCGS coin number that it got the closed bud designation.
