Are all of these graded by PCGS genuine because they're holed?

Example on eBay

I want one! They're awesome. image

Typically graded - problem coins end up in genuine holders.

Look at Heritage if you want to see examples.

That one looks pretty scrubbed with graffiti - no description of why they call it a "discovery" piece??

That Token was issued "holed". Its noted, but as far as holes go, PCGS dosent count that as a negative on this particular piece since its 'as struck'.

The price isn't all that unreasonable - this one for example sold for $2300 on Heritage.

You'll see a dandy unholed specimen on the cover of Whitman's new Guide Book of Canadian Coins and Tokens:

    image

The Red Book discusses these tokens on page 74 of the 2012 edition.

Canadian Coins and Tokens goes into more detail (see page 46) and discusses several varieties.

Isn't there only one unholed specimen known?

I think they're almost all holed at 12:00 on the obverse, and barring other issues, such a token will get in a graded holder. CRO guys or JK will confirm this.

There was a nice northwest token on heritage two weeks back. That was graded VF 25. Went unsold, but asking price was $10k.
Most pieces are ground finds, and the majority of encapsulated pieces ive seen have been net graded with your usual corrosion, pitting, etc that befits a coin nearing 200 years of age.
Many of the surviving population comes from a hoard found in the 1970's in a Native American burial site. Apparently it was a popular tradition amongst the tribes to bury their dead with some earthly treasures to bring along into the afterworld, and these northwest company tokens are sometimes encountered.
Very cool pieces of history and expensive in ANY grade.

And I'm guessing that those remaining tokens that are still entombed in burial sites will likely stay that way, as the laws today are far more restrictive.

But you never know what may turn up from other sources. An elderly dealer friend of mine recently came into possession of a decent sized hoard of Can bank tokens
found in an attic of an old house. These were all dated pre-1835 (not the typical Bank of Montreal, etc pieces) and most of them were XF-AU.

The problem free examples of this tough type do grade normally at PCGS even with the hole as the were holed when made. There are two or three unhooked examples known, but they rarely every trade hands.

Most examples are found with various stages of environmental problems as a group was found many years ago In a riverbed and as such were exposed to the elements for over a century. They are great historical items and are always in demand no matter what their condition is.

PCGS grades this type but designates it as HOLED on the slab label. Note there are two different PCGS coin#'s for the brass and copper variants:
