Toning on modern gold

Since this topic was brought up in my buffalo thread, I thought I would start a new thread on modern gold toning.
Here are a couple of examples of some 1st spouse coins I have. Washington-on her bonnet of both coins and on the shawl on the proof.
Madison- nearly the entire reverse is toned and the obverse, more on the left side than the right.
Let's see some of yours that have toning.

I also have a FS (Abigal Adams) in a PCGS holder that has toning on 50 percent of the front of the coin. I also have a Polk that is in OGP that has a toning strait line that runs from one side of her face to the other. I have seen a few other FS with serious toning issues. Most of them I have seen are in PCGS holders....

My theory is that PCGS paper labels are not sealed from the coin, thus gassing them. Also have seen this problem with ICG holders. Occurs most often with AGE's from what I have witnessed.

I would hate to think at such a late date no one thought to check paper and ink?

Intense and very cool! Just out of curiosity, would it still get a 70 if sent in for regrade? Not that it really matters
as that coin is a keeper.

I don't see why not, strike is perfect and no hits........IMO.....should get a MS70+image
As long as toning has nice appeal, just like silver, it shouldn't hold it back.

@coinsrfun -- Did you submit that raw yourself, or did you buy it slabbed like that already?

Either way I think that much toning on a gold coin in less than 4 years is nothing short of alarming. I recognize the fact that it's quite pretty, but if it toned that much in the slab in just a few years, imagine how dark it will become in another 10. I saw at least a half dozen gold eagles (particularly the 1/10th burnished coins) at the FUN show that were on they way to looking like the example above. Two coins were nearly there already, but none were as quite as appealing as your pic.

This is interesting. I knew AGEs would tone, but I always thought it was the fact that they were .9166 pure, and it was the copper in the alloy that was toning.

I didn't know .9999 gold was chemically capable of toning (I thought gold itself was relatively inert), unless there was an impurity on the surface, production chemicals, fingerprint oils, etc.

Might not be that obvious to those who don't know uncirculated gold eagles, but this is virtually a black and white difference. It's why I bought this one:

Not really the same thing, but copper spots aren't unheard of on modern gold:

I bought it slabbed already, never have seen a modern with
such nice toning, usually it's spotty.

I'm not really sure it will tone much further or
darker but there is always a possibility .
I like it twice as much because it's a 2008-W one of lowest
    mintage fractionalsimage

I don't recall seeing a Maple Leaf with toning, they are as pure as they can make them.

Gold is one of the few metals that has no isotopes, extremely stable.

We should distinguish between natural, unitentional toning; and artificial and/or intentionally doing something to expedite or induce toning.

    MC,
    Good point!!
Did you inquire on the prices of the toning burnished coins? I'm just curious if the sellers were trying to get a premium or discount the prices for the toning.

I don't remember what they sold for but I do think the averaged around $400 per so I don't know if a premium was paid as I don't recal the price or gold at the time?
