A question about 1972 P Lincoln DD varieties

In the Cherrypickers Guide, 5th Ed, Vol1, the image for the FS 104 shows some ridges on the rim adjacent to LIBERTY. Is this diagnostic of this particular variety or are there others with the same anomaly? The coin in question is undoubtedly a DD, but I'm not certain which one. Also, the doubling appears to be clockwise.
Thanks, Mark

  • That is a cud on die 4, die 4 is the rarest of all of them and a collector will pay huge bucks for a MS example. A cud on a non-die 4 is very possible so post a pic and remove the doubt.

Die #4 is a coin that can be found with no cuds, to major cuds like the example below. Also cuds are found on other non Die #4 cents. So you can not determine if its a Die # 4 by cuds alone. The doubling, and reverse die scratches must also be there. On some aVERY faint/fine die crack can be seen above the L in liberty.

Check both Coppercoins.com and the Lincolnresource.com web pages to see other photos and markers.

There is a counterclockwise doubling of the letters of
LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date.
A short die gouge protrudes from the rim north of the L
    in LIBERTY.
On the rev. three nearly parallel die scratches extend
SW from the bottom of the N in UNITED.

Love My Liberty, thanks, this has a short horizontal line above the L, but the reverse is virtually die polish free. There is one short line parallel to the rim , and at the rim, above the N in UNITED.

Wexler & Flynn, in their book The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents, 2nd Edition,
say the obv. die failed early. There may be a short vertical die gouge found inside the upper N
of UNITED and numerous die scratches run west to east above & below the Memorial.
